Resuming Gerhard's restoration: think I've FINALLY found one of its hugest issues (if not the hugest one, actually)!!!!! . One that effectively bothered me from the VERY beginning: since my first encounter with Gerhard (was some three years ago), I had always noticed that some channel amplifier boxes had intermittents. Some VERY nasty ones that would sometimes stop some tracks from recording while the tape was running, or that would randomly get their VU-meters crazy, or even that would blow the fuse when powering it on... 😱 . After HOURS of research, I found out that two of the 8 tracks' amplifier boxes had bad or even NO ground connection to the chassis!!! That IS really nasty, especially when it's intermittent! ALL boxes MUST have the SAME ground potential in order to function correctly... Turned out that the aluminium support brackets for channels 5 and 7 were not in electrical contact with the chassis of the VU rack (perhaps because the brackets had been too much anodized or something...). . So, they needed a firm connection to the other boxes' ground: hence this simple, elegant, non intrusive, but very effective mod at the back of Gerhard! 😊😊😊 .
