You’ll Always Remain

For @gerita-week‘s Day 1: Flowers.

First and foremost, I don’t own hetalia.  (Wow. Big shocker there.)  

So, idk how floriography might differ between countries and I didn’t have the time to do the research [both on that and, um, where these flowers actually come from, although, this is fiction, so.....], but here’s two of the sites I used for this piece (sorry if there are inaccuracies):

(Normally I would look at more sites, but uh, since I came in on the last day of this week & am writing this quickly, I didn’t really have time.)

Here’s some of the flower/plant meanings that I used:

Yellow Rose- Joy & Friendship  

Coreopsis-  Always Cheerful ; Daisy-  Innocence, Loyal Love, Purity, I'll Never Tell; Azalea-  Take Care of Yourself for Me, Temperance; Gardenia-  You're Lovely, Secret Love

Camellia-  Admiration, Perfection, Good Luck; Cactus-  Endurance; Nasturtiums-  Conquest, Victory in Battle

Grass- Submission; Bluebells- Humility; Purple Hyacinth-  I Am Sorry, Please Forgive Me, Sorrow; Daffodils-  Forgiveness, New Beginnings; White Tulips- New Beginning, Sense of Worthiness,  Forgiveness, Purity, Serenity

Red Roses- Love; Arbutus-  Thee Only Do I Love; Striped Carnations-  Refusal, Sorry I Can't Be with You,  Wish l Could Be with You 

Blue Violets-  Faithfulness; Primrose-  I Can't Live Without You; Lily of the Valley-   Sweetness, Tears of the Virgin Mary, Return to Happiness, Humility, You've Made My Life Complete; White Violets- Let's Take a Chance on Happiness;  Ambrosia-  Your Love is Reciprocated

Black Roses- Death, Tragic Love, Pure Devotion, Farewell

Mixed Zinnia-  Thinking (or in Memory) of an Absent Friend

The first time flowers were exchanged, it was Italy who thrusted the bouquet of yellow roses into Germany’s arms.  There was a wince as a thorn pierced skin and a light blush on cheeks as his tongue struggled to shape a thank you.  

They had not been friends long and he had no use for flowers.  Nonetheless it was a kind gesture, a symbol of friendship, so an empty vase was found and a place reserved on his desk.

A sigh escaped him as the scent wafted through the room.  There was no escaping that boy- even in absence, he was always there.

Once, Italy convinced him to take some time away from all the planning and preparations.  He takes him to a field of flowers and sets to work on making a crown.

Germany works in frustration as stems break loose from their ties, the work undone and the progress erased.

His fingers fumble under the guidance of Italy’s nimble ones.

In the end, the crown of coreopsis pales in comparison to Italy’s crown of daisies, azalea, & gardenias.

Italy beams at Germany’s work and kisses his cheeks with gratitude and affection, before he gently places his own masterpiece on Germany’s head.

Before each battle, Italy sent camellia & cacti-  good luck and endurance to the man, the nation, he so admired.

And each time Germany was successful in conquest or battle, Italy sent him nasturtiums- the flower of victory.   

The sweet smell flooded the German’s lungs and invigorated him.

He could take on the world.

After a particularly bad blunder, Germany yells and Italy is shaken.  There is fear and shame as he trembles in the fields, yanking up grass and bluebells and purple hyacinth.  He makes a hasty arrangement, places it on the doorstep, returns to his room, hoping for the best.

In the morning there is a bouquet a daffodils & white tulips on his bedside table.

Italy smiles, tears running down his cheeks.

When Italy gives him the red roses and arbutus, he panics.  This is not the time to be facing the feelings he’s had for decades.  His boss would never accept it.  They’d both be in trouble.  He couldn’t risk it.

He smiles weakly as Italy kisses his cheeks and dashes off to meet his brother.  He can feel the angry Italian’s eyes boring into his back and he can feel himself tense up in response.

Later, with a heavy heart, he knocks on Italy’s door, avoids looking into his eyes as he rushes an apology and the shoves the Striped Carnations into his arms.

He doesn’t wait for his reaction.  He walks briskly forward without looking back.  His hands are fists and his chest is heavy.

The monitors are beeping steadily, but he is still unresponsive.  

Germany thinks back to after the war, when Italy handed him Blue Violets, Primrose, and Lily of the Valley.  Tears ran down his cheeks as he embraced the German  and wished him the best of luck on a speedy recovery.  There was a smile on his lips as he kissed Ludwig’s cheek.

Now his face is blank.  The years have worn him down and his heart can barely stand to beat anymore.

Germany is distressed and focuses his energy and mind on arranging the lilies of the valley, yellow roses, white violets, and ambrosia.  Any distraction will do, because now he knows.....

He’s waited too long and now it’s too late.

Tracing the name on the cold stone, he holds back his tears.   Purple petals drop from the hyacinths and the thorns of black roses pierce his skin.

He can not feel anything.  And he doesn’t remember how to let go.  The past is raw, yet already gone.

The people are already moving forward with their lives- patching up the pieces and pretending like nothing happened at all.

Germany has a future; Italy does not- those are the facts.

He drops the remains of withered flowers and turns his back to the grave.

He will not let him see his tears.  

And he will not accept his losses.

Bouquets of mixed Zinnia cover his home, the fragrance spilling from every room.  He buys them from the Americas periodically, uses them to drown in memory.

The others encourage him to move on.  It has been decades, but he refuses.  He cannot change the past and he cannot leave it behind.  The feelings and memories are scars on heart and mind.

He is young and he is still learning to forget.

But with each painting he studies and letter he reads, he is learning to remember.

Italy is not gone; he was always there 

and he always shall remain.

This he knows.

The absence is never a permanent one.

(*Coughs*  Here’s more badly drawn stuff.  Um, along with not knowing how to draw, I also can’t cook. *Sweating*  But, uh, they were making spaghetti (which is in the bowl on the table) & tomato sauce.)

GerIta Week Day Seven: San Buon Valentino

Germany held onto his little buddy, embarrassed beyond belief. He had misinterpreted Italy’s casual signs of affection for something more and he was mortified. If a hole were to suddenly open up in the floor, he would have jumped in, in a heartbeat, anything to escape being stared at by the other restaurant patrons and the horrified look on their waiter’s face. As for Italy, there was no way Germany could look his little buddy in the eye without cringeing. So he simply buried his face in the crook of Italy’s neck as he held him and pretended that this whole mess never happened.

While he tried hard to forget his world was going to pieces all around him, Germany’s mind latched onto the image of cute little girl in a field of flowers. There was something vaguely familiar about her that he could not for the life of him place. Since it was a calming image, he clung to it. The more centered and relaxed he felt, after shutting off all the hurt feelings, the more his view of the little girl expanded. It got to the point where Germany saw a hand in a black sleeve reach out to tuck a flower behind the little girl’s ear. Germany sighed softly.

Italy slowly pulled back and looked at his friend. “Are you okay?”

Germany nodded.

“Do you want to stay here and have dinner or go home?”

“Go home…” Germany said softly.

“Okay.” Italy waved the waiter over. He smiled at him. “I’m sorry, but my German friend here is unwell and we need to go home. We haven’t ordered yet, so we’re just going to go.” Italy stood up. He waited for Germany to follow suit, and taking him by the arm, he gently guided his best friend out of the restaurant.

“Thank you.” Germany looked shyly at his friend. “I’m sorry… I…”

Italy smiled. “It’s okay. I’m glad Capitano likes me.” His smile broadened into a cheeky grin. “Maybe now Capitano won’t get mad at me if I slack off during training…?” he teased.

Germany frowned. He opened his mouth to say something, but thought better of it when he realized his little buddy was just teasing him. “Maybe,” he said softly. “And maybe Herr Hauptmann would like to pick up some gelato and cook his friend a nice dinner at his house.”

“I’d like that!” Italy took off at a slow jog.

Germany shook his head and hurried after him. Despite his suit and tie and dress shoes, the familiar routine of a training run did wonders for improving his mood. By the time they reached the store he was able to put the whole embarrassing affair behind him. It oddly helped that Italy was his old clingy, exuberant, flirty self as Germany felt nothing about his stilted, ill-timed declaration of love fazed him. It was like that had never happened and Germany was grateful his little buddy behaved in that manner. Because if Italy were to run away and avoid him… Germany shook his head and steadfastly refused to entertain that idea.

The trip to the store was like any of the myriad ones they had made in the past and so was dinner. Italy even spent the night, snuggling close to Germany, like he always did. They fell asleep with Germany spooning in behind his little buddy, only to wake up in the morning with Italy in arms like any other day. It was while they were getting ready for their early morning jog, that Germany realized he need not have declared his love in such a silly manner, Italy knew better than he did the depths of his feelings for him. By sticking close and not bringing up the embarrassing moment, Germany knew Italy returned his feelings. Their love for each other was there all along in shared cups of coffee and plates of pasta, in bowls of gelato and grilled wursts, in games of football and long walks with the dogs.

(*Hops in Super Late*  So.....I was sick & busy all week, but I still wanted to join in, so, uh, I’ll be posting some.....not so good fanart & stuff throughout the night, I guess.  *Sweating*  It’s bad, but I tried & I hope that counts for something.

Also-  the colour looked different on the iPad wtf??? Italy’s skin should not be that shade.  Sorry!    And the anatomy-  Oh God.)

Gerita week, day 7: Buon San Valentino

I would have wanted to have time to draw something beautiful, but nooo. After being tired and at work all day I ended up drawing this.
