An paper on Commonplace Fencing and how the information of the Combat Systems exhibited in sources from Spain, Italy, England and German share a common structure.
‘Commonplace fencing’ is the name which we might assign to a general set of established methods of fencing, diffused within society during the period 1300- 1600. In principle, there cannot be any such thing as a ‘shared martial art’, because all martial arts are taught by individuals, often in accordance with their own skills and experience, within their own institutional system. This having been said, there are traceable and repeatable techniques which may be found over the period mentioned, and they are found with such regularity as to suggest that there was a commonplace basis upon which fencing was practiced. It is likely something akin to an ‘industry standard’, perhaps an informal, but observable set of practices which any instructor of any worth must have been versed in.
