German Song Lyrics Explained Alligatoah’s “Doktor Spielen”
Hi everyone learning German! This link leads you to a Notion page of a copy of the lyrics to the German Alligatoah Song "Doktor Spielen" and notes on what certain phrases mean.
We all love music as a means to learn a language - sometime's it'd be nice to know what's going on in the songs exactly. Listening to "Doktor spielen" while cooking earlier, I noticed how many idioms and expressions were in there that might seem strange to non-natives and I wanted to explain them (in simple German!) so that you understand what's going on AND have a learning experience. There's also a version available with english translations (for both the song lyrics and my explanatory notes)
Maybe this just something that I would like for my language learning but maybe it is what you've been looking for.
Should someone find this helpful, I'd be exited to make more of this! Here the link again in full: https://nickel-war-d7c.notion.site/Shared-on-Tumblr-ebf9b5d9db7d4295bc59064a572f15d1
German grammar resource
Hello friends, so my bf stumbled across this resource for grammar recently and I wanted to share it with you all! The pdfs are grouped by levels and they include some exercises too. They’re provided by the VHS Passau and can be downloaded for free.
Here are the direct links to the pdfs:
A1
A2
B1
B2
C1
Their website with some more resources can be found here.
Hope this helps you guys!
Note: I am simply linking to their website and not uploading the documents separately because the website states that that is not allowed.
If you are searching for an awesome German channel I can recommend Gronkh. He’s extremely famous here and most of the time he speaks very clearly. Well, except when he’s playing with others like you shouldn’t watch the HWSQ videos, you probably just going to understand gibberish. But I can recommend his Let’s plays where he’s playing alone. Minecraft for example or Let’s Rutsch
NICE! thanks for the recommendation I’ll definitely check him out
useless fact: I'm using the "Sicher!" handbooks to improve my German and I must say they're great! I just don't like that if you buy them on separate levels (like C1.1 and C2.2) they don't provide you with DVDs which are necessary for a few exercises. anyway apart from that they are a really interesting resource, I would recommend them!
Something German I listen to during my daily commute is
The news by Deutschlandfunk.
As far as I understand, it's simply the news they share in the radio recorded and uploaded (every 30min) to Spotify, and it covers international as well as national news.
What's super nice about it (especially if you're still practicing German!) is that it's only 5 minutes long and in those five minutes:
- they give an overview at the start (short list, one sentence for each topic)
- they go through each topic, about 30-60sec each
- they give the same overview again
So you'll get an idea and keywords, then get the story, and at the end you can see if you understand more of the overview once you've heard more of the story and context!
You are learning German and are at least mildly interested in history?
Let me put you on something:
Ernst H. Gombrichs: Eine kurze Weltgeschichte für junge Leser
The author wrote considering that if you really try, you can explain absolutely everything to a child and specifically does not want his book to be seen as something you have to study (memorize dates and names etc) but as something you should enjoy. At the same time, he hugely respects children ans understands how much they can learn and does not talk down to them but instead uses cool metaphors to explain grand concepts to even the smallest children.
Bad news: I cannot find a free copy/pdf anywhere online, I am sorry (please anyone let me know if you do!)
Good news: There is a professional recording on Spotify!!
Part one: Von den Anfängen bis zum Mittelalter
https://open.spotify.com/album/51QjgeOikJ5jvbuwoqB64U?si=N5rfxmWUR_el0aFkHAMf_g
Part two: Von der Renaissance bis heute
https://open.spotify.com/album/5xe9blTtuxY8TOpNOfnS4t?si=MQVanUmRT52QjUlGOI7q0w
EVEN BETTER NEWS: It is read by Christoph Waltz.
You don't know who that is? Maybe you do, actually. It's one of the austrian-german actors known in the US. For example, he plays the Nazi Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds, and he's Bond's antagonist in Spectre.
Anywho, Christoph Waltz is a man to behold and his reading of the Kurze Weltgeschichte für junge Leser is absolutely marvelous.
I've loved the audiobook since I was little,
when I got together with my partner I showed it to him and he loved it too,
and we still listen to it to fall asleep in the evening.
I know listening to a book in German as a beginner or even intermediate might be scary but I implore you to try. No one says you can't start over again and again, no one says you have to understand everything. You can simply listen to Waltz's calming voice and be proud everytime you understand a word.
Listening to the book has always been such a magical experience for me and I hope it might be one for you as well.
We know I like sharing audiobooks on Spotify, here's another one (which Germans might be interested in too because the nostalgia is strong in this one!)
Briefe von Felix
It's a series of stories of a girls stuffed animal, Felix (he's a rabbit), who travels all across the world and sends her letters and tells her about his travels.
It is SO cute. I used to have a Briefe-von-Felix-Backpack and I never loved a Tasche as much since then.
The books were usually designed with little envelopes on the pages you could open and take out small letters and stuff... I miss them
Here's the link, i really really recommend it!!
