Artists + Kids: Dauvit Alexander and Gerry Florida
SCC's Artists & Kids program is an arts immersion Studio workshop that pairs inner-city youth with professional artists for a weekend of creative exploration and hands-on making.
In the lead-up to our original exhibition ENOUGH Violence: Artists Speak Out, artists Dauvit Alenxander (Glasgow, Scotland) and Gerry Florida (Pittsburgh, PA) recently led a workshop focused on developing behavioral strategies and a sense of personal protection through the creation of talismans and amulets. Thanks to a generous donation from the Jack Buncher Foundation, 12 students, ages 12 - 16, received full scholarships to the two-day workshop where they learned basic jewelry making skills, gained an awareness of recycling and repurposing materials, and explored the powerful social messages that can be embedded in jewelry.
This was one talented group of kids! Stop by the Studio to see their work in person!
