Album Review of the Week: Pat Benatar - Get Nervous (1982)☆☆☆
Get Nervous is Benatar's 4th album in as many years. The first few songs have incredibly different sounds, so much so that I was surprised to see there was in fact just one producer and not a whole group doing different things. However, by the 4th or 5th track, we settle into the usual pop rock sound.
The album opens with its hit single, Shadows of the Night. This song also garnered Benatar's 3rd Grammy win for best female rock performance. It has that classic anthemic chorus that is needed for a solid 80s rock hit and a fantastic guitar solo towards the end. Her vocals are also top tier, Grammy deserved.
Looking For A Stranger has a crazy keyboard sound and super bouncy instrumentals. It is definitely a sharp turn from the previous track, however it is still very fun and while this is obviously a more difficult track for her to sing, she does a great job!
Anxiety (Get Nervous) takes another sharp turn back into the rock realm with some new wave pop sensibility. The guitar solo is so classic MTV, the entire track is really. This track was only released in Europe as a single, although it does have a music video. The video wouldn't fly today but it definitely captures the drama and the era!
Fight It Out continues the dramatics in the form of a rock ballad. She has some great aggressive vocals in this one.
The Victim gets us into the standard pop rock style that will be with us the rest of the album. It has a lot of energy, but somehow lacks depth and interest at the same time.
After such variances in the first half, side two sounds so much the same that I get bored with 2.5 songs left to go! The general sound is good, but with nothing different happening to keep things interesting it gets old fast. Standouts from side 2: Little Too Late, I'll Do It, Tell It To Her
Pat Benatar's "Get Nervous" cover album, but with Uraraka 😁
“We're running with the shadows of the night. So, baby, take my hand. It'll be alright. Surrender all your dreams to me tonight. They'll come true in the end.”
