so i recently started school, and i feel that the anxiety of wanting to enter the year on the right foot can be really challenging to deal with! we all know that we have to make good first impressions on the teachers and start off with the best grades possible, but how exactly do you do that?
i feel this anxiety a lot, so i wanted to make a post on exact tips and tricks for starting school right, as well as some general practices that i’ve picked up over time. if anybody has any additions, please please let me know or add a comment to this post! :-)
first of all, making a good first impression on teachers. i get a ton of anxiety over it and admittedly, i’m not the best person to ask...but here are a few tips anyway!
acclimate to their teaching style. do this in the first few days of school. it helps to rid yourself of any preconceived notions or assumptions about what they may be like. this also goes for stuff you’ve heard from other students—everyone experiences class differently. also, get a sense of the class rules during this time. a teacher will generally outline specific class rules in the syllabus, and may or may not make them looser as time goes on.
work hard and show drive in their class. tbh, this is the only foolproof way to “get a teacher to like you”. if you show motivation in class and a desire to succeed, they’ll know! even if you don’t think you’re good at that subject, go to the teacher during designated times for help.
don’t sweat it! yes, impressions matter, but ultimately, will the first day of school matter that much? try and keep your perspective realistic. and if you work hard and study, then you’re still doing a great service to yourself—even if the teacher “doesn’t like you” in the end.
this brings me to my next point: keep your grades high in the first few days! of course you should never pressure yourself too much, but as the subject matter is usually simplest/easiest in the beginning of the year, try to take advantage of that by making the best grades you can. establishing a pattern of hard work will also create a good foundation later on in the class.
finally, have fun! while you should definitely focus on working hard and keeping good grades, a new school year is also a fantastic time to catch up with your friends, meet new ones, and as sappy as it sounds, find out more about yourself. join that club that you never thought you’d be interested in if it looks cool! (this especially goes for freshmen). if your school holds events like football games, now is the perfect time to go. honestly, try not to stress out over it too much! don’t do anything you feel uncomfortable with ofc, but take advantage of the fresh start to try new things.
i hope this post helped you out! even if the tips seemed basic, i tried to include a lot of detail and little things i’ve learned haha. please lmk if you want to see more resource posts like this, and have a wonderful day!!
