The normally desperate to be outdoors three year old has just demanded to come in and is now making his way through another gallon of water. It must be hot.
There was a time when heatwaves meant suntans, skimpy dresses and strappy sandals. Today, my first thought was ‘how much washing can I get dry’ and then when we went into the garden to put the first lot out, my mind turned to how to keep an energetic monkey entertained when a sunny afternoon is going to be too hot to be any fun.
I had had a moment of dread, imagining the fight to get him back through the doors when things got really hot but he was there before me. The washing is still out there and as it would be wrong not to clean everything in the house while the weather is good, we’ll be spending the afternoon playing at washing machines, drying and clothes horses. His future wife or husband will thank me for it and he’s actually quite good at starting the machine now.
Heatwave 2016 is all about the smell of washing powder here.
