The New Century Dictionary, published in 1927, defines marriage as, “The state of being married, or of being a husband or wife; the relationship between husband and wife.”
The Penguin English Dictionary, published in 1965, explains marriage to be, “legal union sanctioning the cohabitation and sexual intercourse of a man and a women, civil or religious ceremony instituting this, wedding; relationship between husband and wife.”
The Oxford English Dictionary defines marriage as, “The condition of being a husband or wife; the relationship between persons married to each other. This term is now sometimes used with reference to long-term relationships between partners of the same sex.”
In the Merriam- Webster Dictionary it is defined as, “the state of being united to a person of opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law [;] the state of being united to a person of the same sex in relationship like that of a traditional marriage.”
