There are major blocks in the controversy of same-sex marriage. It is criticized by religious advocates. Many base their arguments on religious texts. They argue that it is sinful to engage in anything else that is not traditional marriage as stated in the bible. Equality also plays an important part in the controversy of same-sex marriage. Supporters of same-sex marriage argue that denying gay couples the right to marry is restricting them from their right of equality.

I believe that freedom and equality are both essential to a quality life; however, I believe they fall hand-in-hand. Equality is a major part of freedom. There is no possible way to be truly free without both. It is difficult to have one without the other. Having to chose a side I suggest that equality is of more importance. If everyone is equal then they would share the same benefit of freedom as presented by the Bill of Rights. Without equality, there could not be freedom because everyone would not be treated equally. During the Civil Rights Movement African-Americans fought for equality. With the fight for equality they were able to gain freedom.

The definition of marriage was pulled into the controversy of same-sex marriage. It is seen as the most important element in the controversy. Same-sex marriage is looked down upon by religious advocates. They base their stance on religious texts. They argues that it is sinful to engage in such acts and wrongful to allow such marriage. Same-sex couples are excluded from majority of federal documents and benefits granted by them. The definition of marriage has been shaped by the controversy of same-sex marriage. There have been revisions of the definition of marriage, but there is yet to be a definition that defines marriage in a form to fit societies needs.

Marriage:
The New Century Dictionary, published in 1927, defines marriage as, “The state of being married, or of being a husband or wife; the relationship between husband and wife.”
The Penguin English Dictionary, published in 1965, explains marriage to be, “legal union sanctioning the cohabitation and sexual intercourse of a man and a women, civil or religious ceremony instituting this, wedding; relationship between husband and wife.”
The Oxford English Dictionary defines marriage as, “The condition of being a husband or wife; the relationship between persons married to each other. This term is now sometimes used with reference to long-term relationships between partners of the same sex.”
In the Merriam- Webster Dictionary it is defined as, “the state of being united to a person of opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law [;] the state of being united to a person of the same sex in relationship like that of a traditional marriage.”

When doing peer revisions I found common mistakes such as comma splices and the use of first person. It was difficult to revise my peers work because there was not any form of organization in the essays. I also noticed that the paragraphs did not pertain to just one idea. It made me reflect on the organization of my paper and it brought me to revise my essay. In high school I never wrote nearly as much as I have in this class. We also had more time to work on our essays. The essays I wrote in high school were mainly reflections/analysis of articles. The prompts for our essays in GEW 101 require more extensive critical thinking.

1. The commercial is misleading and fails to focus on the most important part: the health aspect of the chocolate.
2. Snickers does not effectively advertise to all possible audiences.
3. Snickers advertising methods are unethical and disrespectful.
Final Research paper
My research paper revolves around the issue of gender equality. I didn't take the the typical stance on it though. I put a spin on the issue and attacked it from the stand point of sports. It was a tough paper to research because the topic was so specific that there was not a ton of research done on the topic. After a lot of hard work and flip flopping of personal stance on the issue, I came to my conclusion. My conclusion was that while it may not be equal that men in women play in different divisions. There are reasons for this and the reasons are quite legitimate. Such reasons being physical ability and the fact that women are just not genetically composed to compete with men. This realization made me take a step back and look at the big picture, men and women are equal in this day and age. Women do have the same opportunities in all facets of society that men have. As far as what I learned from this essay numerous things; how to research a paper, how to have correct sentence structure, and lastly how to use punctuation correctly. Overall I learned more than I have ever learned from this paper
Final Research Paper
My research paper was on the topic of gun control. One of the first things I learned was that gun control is a very broad topic. Gun control is a topic which revolves around gun free zones, who is owning guns, and what type of guns are available altogether. At first I thought that people against gun control mainly wanted to defend their rights to the second amendment which is still true; however, after doing research I had found statistics from other countries that gun control actually made the crime rate increase. I have also learned that along with safety, gun control can have an impact on the economy as well.
