Final Research paper

My research paper revolves around the issue of gender equality. I didn't take the the typical stance on it though. I put a spin on the issue and attacked it from the stand point of sports. It was a tough paper to research because the topic was so specific that there was not a ton of research done on the topic. After a lot of hard work and flip flopping of personal stance on the issue, I came to my conclusion. My conclusion was that while it may not be equal that men in women play in different divisions. There are reasons for this and the reasons are quite legitimate. Such reasons being physical ability and the fact that women are just not genetically composed to compete with men. This realization made me take a step back and look at the big picture, men and women are equal in this day and age. Women do have the same opportunities in all facets of society that men have. As far as what I learned from this essay numerous things; how to research a paper, how to have correct sentence structure, and lastly how to use punctuation correctly. Overall I learned more than I have ever learned from this paper

Lifelong Student

Being a lifelong learner means learning in and outside of the classroom, it means you take the material learned from in the classroom and applying it to your everyday life, it means taking a situation with no real significance and learning from it to make yourself a better person: to be a lifelong learner you have to be dedicated and sharpen your mind to be focused at all moments, to be  a lifelong learner means applying your mental focus to every situation no matter how insignificant it may be, lifelong learners take moments in their life that are negative and turn them into positive learning experiences, they use everything that learned in school and apply it situations outside of their school surroundings, a lifelong learner understands there is no end to learning, there is only a beginning and the rest of their life is learning.

Ethos and Gender Equaltiy

Ethos is defined as the fundamental character or spirit of a culture, or the underlying disposition of a community, group, person, etc. (dictionary.com).  When it comes to gender equality the appeal to ethos plays a major role. There are different two different appeals to ethos when it comes to this subject, women have one set of beliefs, they believe that there should be no reason why women and men shouldn't not be viewed as equals. This is there morals and there beliefs so that is why it is an appeal to ethos. Where men have a different set of beliefs typically, they usually believe that women and men should be seperated by gender roles because they believe women are not able to do the same as men. The perfect example of this is in sports there are women and men's sports for almost every sport possible and this why we have the problem of gender equality that we have. It starts by desegregating sports and allowing women and men to play together. Until men and lose this idea that women are unable to do the same things as them this subject will remain the same

A: America and the whole world in general has become so consumed by materialistic things. We are all about what we own and that is how we judge people now.

X: An example of this in the video is when Macklemore says "Wanted to be him I wanted to be that guy, I wanted to touch the rim I wanted to be cool, and I wanted to fit in I wanted what he had, America, it begins"

E: Macklemore is saying that he thought by having these new basketball shoes that they were going to make him cool. When he says that he "wanted to be that guy" he is referring to all those athletes and people that he looked up to that wore those. Then he states that this is where it all begins, he means it starts out with one pair of shoes but eventually it is the American way to get bigger and better things.

S: When we ultimately judge people by what they have it is not fair because obviously someone who has more money than someone who grew up without that kind of money is going to be seen as better than that person without money. It is not fair to people who are not as well off financially because they will not be seen as equal as someone who is wealthy.

Audience: This video is intended for anybody who is interested in how we as a society have been consumed with how materialistic we have become as a society. It could also be intended for the younger generation who is all about trends.

Text: The text is how Macklemore uses a story from his childhood to explain to kids and society how we are consumed by this obsession to be trendy and updated on the coolest and latest fads. The text is also the concept that we have become a very materialistic society and how we are all about what everybody else has.

Surrounding Context: The overall message of this video is how far we are carrying trends these days. We will do anything to get our hands on the latest and greatest thing. Ultimately we judge people on how they dress and what nice things they have.

The video starts out with the image of a brutal hit put on NFL Wide Receiver Desean Jackson, it shows both him and the defensive player that hit him laying in agonizing pain. The video continues to show the shocking footage of brutal hits that have occurred in football and other sports like hockey. The video continues to flash words in the middle of these clips to show you the effects these concussions not only have on player but on family members and friends of these athletes. This video really hit me because as an athlete I know how hard it is to sit out a game because of injury. People say " well just sit out of the game, its whats good for you", but it's not that easy as an athlete. As a player you have a ton of pride in what you do on the field and when you sit out a game you feel like it makes you look weak in the eyes of not only you teammates but also everyone who watched you sit out that game. So you take the risk and most of the time you play it off like everything is fine so you can stay on the field. Like the young man in the clip tells us, it's not OK, most of the time when you stay out there, the injury worsens and all of the sudden you are dealing with something even more serious than before. Now i'm not saying it is all on these professional sports organizations to make the game safer, cause some of it is held on the athletes shoulders. These sports organizations do need to make strides in keeping players safer from concussions because right now the current regulations are not cutting. Now I won't go into depth about what they need to change because i will leave that for a later time but what I will is that if they want the players to be safe after their careers are over, they need to make drastic changes.
