The sun set slowly, painting the sky golden with soft pink tones. Red and orange glowed in the centre of the sunset, while the deep black sky with stars and moon took over the sky behind the estate. The couple had briefly retreated to a quieter corner of the garden, gazing across the lake. Jānis smiled as Alessandra rested her head on his shoulder.

The long veil of the white dress, which was embroidered with the finest lace, fluttered in the wind. He, on the other hand, was wearing a black tailored suit, the pristine white button down having no crinkles. As the couple kissed, the setting sun bathed the newlyweds in golden light.

❝Footsteps were barely audible as she ran. The screams of her name were blended out as she ran. She ran till her lungs felt like collapsing, till her legs gave out. As the dark blonde, more like brunette fell to her knees she did not feel the scrapping of skin against asphalt close to the forest. A scream escaped her lips, full of pain and self fueling hate. It was her fault that she had been too scared to tell him. If she would not have listened to the men who threatened her and would have just told him instead of believing their lies that they would hurt him all would not have happened.

The cross necklace felt hot against her skin while the raindrops felt like ice. She tilted her head back, raindrops falling on her face. The cold raindrops felt like ice against her skin. No tears were visible for anyone who might pass by. They were mixing with the rain as she wept. A familiar hand pulled her close, she could smell wood, gunpowder, home. She wept harder as he pulled her close, whispering sweet nothings in her ear. ❞

The man stopped in the vast living room, looking bleary-eyed at the little boy. The four-year-old son stopped mid-movement, just as he was about to finish climbing up onto the couch. Ivano's eyes slid to the clock that hung in the hallway. The numbers read 1:34 am in the dim, bluish light. The man quickly crossed the few meters that separated him from his firstborn son before he settled next to him. Originally, he had come down to get a glass of water and not to find his son wide awake.

“Kastjan, why are you up at this early hour?”, he asked his son in a hushed whisper, noticing the reddish eyes of his son. The toddler fiddled with his fingers before he clung to his father.

“Ne mogu da spavam, tata”, Kastjan whispered. Ivano sighed, knowing his son was lying to him. He would ask him tomorrow morning. He gently lifted Kastjan up. The toddler burrowed his face in his father's shoulder. “Let's get you to bed, moj mali princ. Možeš ostati sa mamom i sa mnom."

"Now if that is not our freshly married couple fresh of two weeks honeymoon”, the man cheered as he rose. The woman blushed as her husband squeezed her hand. Husband. Wife. For eternity. Her husband smiled at his younger co worker before looking at his wife. Lāsma wore one of his shirts and jacket,, hair tied into a complicated braid. He did not understood how she did it but he had loved watching her.

“Well, Brato, our unofficial son, we had to make sure you are still alive, no?”, Jarek responded pulling Lāsma onto his lap. He laughed softly at the younger man who then leaned forward.

“Now, spill tea about your honeymoon, Jarek and Lāsma. I want to see pictures and know everything minus your bed activities.”

She knelt in front of the cross, knees hitting the kneeler of the bench. Eyes closed and fingers clasped together, the creed tumbled from her lips. A rosary was clasped between her fingers as the smell of frankincense filled the church. Dark strands of hair were visible underneath the veil. Normally, the eoman would not cover her hair while being in church. She only covered the hair when she visited the Vatican but on that day she chose to cover. Light falling through the stained glass windows shone like a halo around her head as the darkness outside the room rose.

As the veil was about to slide off her head and onto her shoulders she pulled it off, piercing blue eyes meeting the icon of Saint Irene of Rome, the patron of peace. There was something demonic ongoing in the city of Saint Irene. People were murdered in the way catholic saints died. Yet, as she looked at the patron of peace she felt all fears disappear. Then, her eyes moved to the altar and the cross as she slowly rose and crossed herself before stepping into the aisle. Her eyes moved to the ceiling where the archangel Michael was painted. The golden cross stood out against lightly tanned skin as she crossed herself again before leaving the church. The sunlight seemed to follow the woman as darkness enclosed the church. She did not see the shadow as she left nor did she hear the faint footsteps following her.
