RIO REALLY JUST SAID “I AM CAPABLE OF PROVIDING FOR YOU BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I ALSO BELIEVE IN YOU AND BTW I REALLY DONT LIKE IT WHEN YOU TALK TO MY BROTHER-COUSIN BECAUSE I AM SO EMBARRASSINGLY IN LOVE WITH YOU” JUST GET DOWN ON ONE KNEE ALREADY JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!
i wanna talk about the lighting for that bar scene between nick and rio because it’s either very poorly lit or very intentionally lit:
it starts with rio and nick pretty centered underneath a (pinterest-chic hipster) light. they’re on equal footing, so to speak.
even from the opposite angle, the (much uglier, but more effective) light is framed between them.
the lighting doesn’t actually change until rio physically moves himself into nick’s space—not just closer to him, but directly into his shadow—and makes it explicitly clear that the conversation he’s having is about beth, not business. he shows his weakness, his vulnerability. and the lighting reflects it.
the best part about this, though? we can actually still see rio’s face throughout the entire interaction. we can’t really see nick’s, not from this particular angle. rio is obscured by nick’s shadow, sure, but nick IS the shadow. his face is dark the whole time in this shot.
and as soon as he leaves, rio’s lit up like an angel again. and then the next time we see him? he’s “knocking” on someone’s door...
what is my point, you ask? great question! i’m not sure. something about how that cold black cloud is coming down..
you know what it is about 4x14 that is making me so crazy? we started the show with beth believing she needed dean (both financially and emotionally) but that dean didn’t want her. and even as it became apparent that dean couldn’t provide for her—in any way, really—he still continued to have this hold over her. he still continued to make her feel (typically via guilt associated with their kids) that she needed him but he never figured out how to make her feel wanted. probably because he has never actually wanted her. he wants a cardboard cutout who makes him feel like a Man™ and takes care of all the things he doesn’t think he should have to.
and then in one single episode, rio said, “you don’t need me but i want you.” and that’s it. it’s that simple. he laid his heart out. it wasn’t about crime or business. it was about her. and i’m feeling very normal about.
i love love LOVE that mick has a relationship with the girls outside of rio now
and i looooOOOOOooovvveee that beth is now the one showing up in homes and sitting there calmly on her phone while mick makes it look like a home invasion
WE HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE
I do, however, understand that rio is acting like a jealous ex boyfriend and it’s embarrassing for him (but great for me)
annie you cannot just climb into bed with another woman and then turn on something that vibrates STOP TEASING ME LIKE THIS
“that was before jesus got involved” lmaoooo unfortunately nick is funny
