Garden House AU by HamsterRodent
The askblog: @askthegardenhouse
Connie huffed, staring at the ceiling.. she couldn’t help but think of that other ask she answered about Brightney…. She felt her body tense and a light feeling of butterflies as she thinks about it… that’s it! Today’s the day..
Brightney walks down the hall to her room, carrying a couple books about plants she had started to re-read after the closure of GardenHouse.. she didn’t have too much to do, aside from work of course-… but then she had free time.. so books it is! She opened the door to her room, she attempted to turn on the light…. But it didn’t work. Great- has her lightbulb ran out in the room? She then shakes her head, no matter… she can just use the one she always has! She turns on her own light, walking fully into her room and closing the door behind her… she then hears whispers… A little shaken from this, she looks around, only to then realize who the culprit probably is..
“Connie… can you stop? I want to read my books..”
The lights immediately come back on, the whispering stops and the ghost is revealed to be on top of one of her tables.. she stares at Brightney… smiling.
“Hi Brightney-“
Connie greets her, preparing a speech in her head about how she’s going to admit her feelings… she sees Brightney just- lay down on her bed.. which was perfect! Connie thought, she stepped up to the bed, staring at her as she thought of what to say…
“What-… are you reading?”
Connie found it… a little hard to start saying the things she wanted to, she could feel her heart beat get quicker, and her mind starting to blank… come on Connie, get it together!
“Nothing too much! Just re-reading books about plants.. re-visiting some older ones and I’ll compare them to the newest ones! How about you..? What do you do now that the GardenHouse closed.. other than your job, of course!”
Connie froze… staring blankly at her, just… admiring her. She was just so… pretty- she wasn’t sure how she’d ever explain it to someone else… it was almost like Brightney was somehow hypnotizing her.. even when all she was doing is reading and doing her thing..
“I uh- prank the others.. and.. and-“
She wanted to say that she liked Brightney, but her mouth was refusing to let out the words she wanted to.. it was almost like- was she too embarrassed to admit it? She hummed.. and shrugged her shoulders.
“I… nothing else, actually..”
Brightney slightly chuckled.. it was funny, but a little sad at the same time. She put a bookmark where she stopped reading, looking over to Connie, whom now had a little blush on her face.
“You could always.. join my book club? It would be fun to have you there..”
Connie’s eyes widened… books? She wasn’t really a big fan of books- she looks down at where her feet would be… unsure if she should accept.. but if she did, she wouldn’t really be able to prank the toons if she was in the book club… she sighed a little.
“I… I don’t know.. I’m not a nerd-“
Brightney snickers a little once more, this was just cute! Connie’s first club, maybe? She opened her book again, humming.
“We don’t just read books… you talk about them, with others in there- or you just explain it. You can also write your own..”
Suddenly, Astro walks into the room, making Connie go invisible.. Brightney then promptly sits up, watching Astro come closer to her and then sit down besides her. He then sighs a little and leans his head on Brightney.
“Today…. I learned that.. I don’t even want to say it now… just.. Can I stay here for a while..?”
Brightney smiles, nodding her head. Astro could stay as long as he wanted to.. But then Astro turned his head to Brightney.. There was another thing he was a little worried about.
“Brightney.. How.. how do I help Dandy? He’s been so spoiled.. And acts so childish at times.. Do you think he will ever.. Not do that? I mean- I do love him and all… it’s just…… What am I saying even…. No it’s fine-”
“Astro, habits are hard to break.. Dandy is the way he is because that was how he was raised… but even that can be changed with discipline. You just need to tell him off when he does that, but also remind him that you love him.. But that he is acting out of line. Do what makes you happy though.. If you really don’t mind his behaviour.. Then let it be.. Although.. He will face the consequences one way or another..”
Astro tenses when Brightney mentions consequences… imaging Dandy in his twisted form.. He took a deep breath.. Brightney was right.. He’d face the consequences of his behavior one way or another… but the secret, he will keep it.. And Astro didn’t blame him.. He would help Dandy with that..
“Right.. Yes.. I’ll try to set him straight when I can..”
“Alright, but remember.. It may be hard at the start, but you just need to persist.. It’s for his own good.”
“Yes! Yes… okay, I’ll go to Dandy now. Thank you.”
Brightney waves to Astro as he slowly leaves the room, though the toon then falls backwards on his bum, making a startled noise, the crinkling of cling film can be heard as Astro takes it off his face.
“Ack- ah… Connie? But how..”
Brightney sighs a little, then stretches her arms, catching Connie in them even though she didn’t even know if Connie was there-
“Hey… little prankster. That wasn’t really nice… please apologize to him.”
Connie felt her heart skip a beat… little prankster…… she needed to hear Brightney say it again- she became visible again, staring at Brightney with wide eyes..
“Can… you say that again?”
“Uh… Go apologize to-”
“No.. the first part- please..?”
“Ah- that… little prankster.”
Astro smirked to himself, snickering quietly as he heard this interaction, he slowly stood up as he held the cling wrap in his hands in a ball.
“Sorry Astro- that was meant for Brightney…”
Connie finally piped up, her cheeks gently flushed a little bit. Astro nodded his head, not really minding this prank now..
“It’s fine, Have a good one, you two.”
He snickered one last time, before leaving the room and shutting the door, letting the two toons in the room all alone once more… Brightney smiled, tilting her head a little bit… she still wasn’t sure if she liked Connie back… but Connie was starting to grow on her now that Brightney was noticing all the cute things she did when around her…
Idk if I can ask multiple characters, but if I can:
Astro, Sprout, Dandy, Razzle/Dazzle, Brightney, how do you feel about a certain caterpillar?
Astro: "He's... a bit emotionally unstable. He is a bit dependent. I worry for him... after everything happened, he's very hard to find, always hiding."
Brightney: "I'm worried about him too. He asks me if he can rejoin the book club, but I can't do that. I do care about him. It's for his own good."
Dandy: "Hooo, boy! He's a sorrow sap, that's for sure! He's better than he gives himself credit for, but he can't be trusted with anyone's books!"
R&D: "He's just a little guy! I have a good relationship with him, but Dazzle knows him best. (I get how it feels to be a bit pessimistic and worrisome... I do miss when he attended book club sessions.)"
Sprout: "Mmmh... sad... poor little buggo. He need support... give him apple pie, his favorite."
Question to all the toons, what do you do if you were given an egg to watch
[This one is long as hell so it goes under a readmore for sanity's sake...]
Dandy: "Egg? Hmm... I'd put it in a plant pot with some soft dirt and make sure it's nice and tended to!"
Astro: "Snrk— that's not how eggs work, Dandy... anyway, I raised moth eggs. How much more difficult could bird eggs be?"
Pebble: "Bwoarf? Bark bark!"
Astro: "... they can't wrestle or play fetch, Pebble."
Shelly: "Protect it! Keep it in my nest! No one is allowed near my egg!"
Vee: "Woah, chill girl! But uh... I don't know, I'm not programmed to be a parent. But I can say I'd be a way better parent that Dandy!"
Dandy: "Hey! Liar! Meanie!"
Sprout: "Keep it nice and warm... Cosmo and I can take shifts...?"
Cosmo: "Sure! And once it hatches, we'll ensure it gets fed well so it can grow big and strong!"
Tisha: "I'm afraid I'm often too busy to care for an egg, you know?"
Rodger: "Perhaps I could raise it to be a little sibling to Toodles... an amusing thought, right, my little girl?"
Toodles: "That'd be so fun! I promise I'd be a good big sister!"
Dyle: "Hmph. I could put it in an incubator and raise it until independent. Then I'd let it go."
Poppy: "We could go on a jog! Do birds like pop, Boxy?"
Boxten: "Uhm.... no...? I personally couldn't raise it. What if I'm holding it, and I drop it, or I trip and fall, or I squeeze it too hard, or it just shatters into shell and yolk in my hands!?"
Teagan: "Boxten, darling, relax... I think I could keep an egg warm until it hatches, and raise it with care."
Looey: "Somehow, I feel like an egg is more fragile than me. I shouldn't be risking both of our safety like that!"
Yatta: "I'll give it CANDY!!! And carry it in my mouth while I crawl through the vents!"
Brusha: "I'll keep it as artistic muse only."
Brightney: "I'm sure I could raise a baby bird, maybe read to it every night."
R&D: "Do eggs like playing? (Uhm... no, they can't do much of anything...) Oh. Then Dazzle will take care of it! (... of course.)"
Connie: "Perfect pranking tool! An egg to the face!"
Shrimpo: "I HATE EGGS! I'LL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!!!"
Finn: "I know you won't do that! You'll probably treat it like your own egg, you'll keep it clean and protected like a reel shrimp!"
Shrimpo isn't feeling too great and decides to carry his brick around for comfort. But his mood doesn't better, and he needs a bit of extra help.
Shrimpo growled as he scratched at his walls, claws digging in. He hated Devan and the way he tried to be nice when scolding him like he COULDN'T HANDLE IT. When digging his claws into the wall started to hurt too much, he turned to his punching bag, leaping at it with a grunt. He smacked and punched at it until he was too tired to go any further, sitting on his bed.
Stupid Devan... he thought, before tugging at his fluff. Stupid stupid STUPID Devan!
He yanked some of his fluff out, before rolling onto his stomach and burying his face in his pillow. And he screeched and screamed and kicked and squirmed. He was alone anyway, no one could tell him not to do it!
When his tantrum subsided, he sat up, panting. After he caught his breath, he got out of his bed and crawled under it to grab something; his brick. Getting out from under his bed, Shrimpo ran his thumbs along it to feel its rough, scratchy texture. It felt nice.
"Maybe I'll bring you with me to grab lunch, Bricky..." he huffed as he stroked the brick.
He didn't want to leave his room. But he was starving, and he'd rather die than beg someone to bring food to him. So he walked over to his door, brick in hand, and slowly opened it.
There was... nobody near. Good, he thought, heading toward the kitchen. He could just eat really quick and retreat to his room. As he entered the kitchen, he saw Sprout, Connie, Finn, and Brightney. Ugh, it really had to be crowded...
"Shrimpo! There you are! You had me worried seasick!" Finn greeted him, immediately causing the others to glance at him.
He tensed as he felt their eyes on him, clutching his brick. Shrimpo just walked over to the fridge, opening it to see what he was going to eat.
"Hey, Shrimpo," Sprout hummed, "do you want some lunch?"
Shrimpo turned to the strawberry with a glare. "WHY ELSE WOULD I BE IN THE KITCHEN, IDIOT!?"
Sprout paused, shutting his eyes and taking a deep breath. Connie and Brightney shared a glance but didn't speak. He squeezed his brick a little tight.
"Okay... what do you want?" The strawberry asked with a fake-nice tone, his smile strained.
"NOTHING FROM YOU!" He hissed, turning back to the open fridge.
He heard footsteps, and some whispering, but he didn't turn. That is, until Sprout spoke up again. "Sit down, I'll make you a grilled cheese with bacon."
Shrimpo closed the fridge forcefully, about to yell... until he saw Finn standing beside Sprout. He shut his mouth and stomped over to a table, stroking his brick with both hands. The fishbowl bounced over, sitting beside him.
"Woah, I haven't seen him carry around that brick in like... a month," he heard Connie hum to Brightney.
He immediately faced her. "WHAT ABOUT IT!? LEAVE BRICKY ALONE! SHUT UP, I HATE YOU!"
Brightney gave Connie a look, and the ghost raised her hands a little before settling beside the lamp again. He felt a hand on his back, turning to see Finn patting him. He pushed his hand away with a growl, holding his brick to his chest.
"What? I'm just saying!" Connie muttered, shaking her head.
"SAY IT INSIDE YOUR HEAD! NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOU TALK!" Shrimpo shouted, standing up from his chair.
Connie rolled her eyes, coming over and snatching his brick. "Why're you getting so fussed about this anyway? It's just a brick!"
He gasped quietly as he felt the brick leave his grasp. He glared at Connie, his claws coming out as he lunged at the ghost.
"GIVE HIM BACK! GIVE HIM BACK HE'S MINE! YOU CAN'T HAVE HIM!" He shrieked as he pinned her down.
As soon as he'd pinned her, though, she went invisible, and he fell to the ground as she disappeared. He didn't see his brick though.
"Connie! Why'd you do that?" Brightney scolded once the ghost reappeared beside her.
The rest of their conversation was drowned out by his heartbeat pounding in his head. He could faintly hear his name being called, but he didn't care. That wasn't important. Without another word, he stood and ran off to his room, leaving the toons in the kitchen to watch in shock.
As he entered his room, he slammed the door, crawling into bed. He pulled the blanket over himself, whining and tugging at his tail. Tears threatened to fall from his eyes, and he clutched the blanket. But not even the softness of the blanket helped; it wasn't his brick.
He heard a knock at his door. "Shrimpo, I'm coming in, okay?" Finn gently warned him from outside.
Finn opened the door, but Shrimpo didn't look. He just hid under the blanket, trembling and whimpering. The fishbowl sat on his bed and set the plate on his bedside table, then gently patted him.
"Shrimpo... hey, look at me... I got you something, maybe it'll kelp." Finn murmured, gently pulling the blanket off him.
Before he could yell at Finn, he noticed the fishbowl was holding something. His brick. He watched as Finn gently set it by him, letting Shrimpo pick it up and hold it to his chest. Those tears from before finally fell, and he sobbed quietly, curling up and stroking his brick. He turned away from Finn, he didn't want to be seen like this.
Finn gently rubbed his back, just allowing the shrimp to get all his feelings out. He eventually ceased his crying, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. Looking up at Finn, he saw the other toon smile, softly running his hands through his fluff. He liked the smooth, cool feel of his glass...
"Do you want some-fin to eat? I brought you the sandwich Sprout made," Finn mentioned as he grabbed the plate.
Shrimpo slowly sat up, but he only used one hand to grab the sandwich, still stroking his brick with the other. As he ate, Finn continued gently petting his fluff. He finished a little slower than usual, but Finn said nothing, setting the plate aside and helping Shrimpo lay down.
Finn pulled the blanket over him, watching him stroke the brick. "You should rest. You'll feel betta when you wake up."
He mumbled a little, closing his eyes. He would probably yell at Finn when he awoke, but at least for now, he was grateful to the fishbowl. It wasn't long before the gentle comfort eased him to sleep.
