All too often I dismiss shoegaze as an immobile genre, stuck in a sound decades-old and often used to cover up shoddy songwriting and/or a lack of ambition. And then I hear an album like Ghayoom, which rubbishes all that entirely; I was just not looking hard enough – this is freshly hooky, distinctly well-written and memorable ’gaze.
