Gotta Have My Hops: Cascade
Image credit: Stone Brewing Co's blog
Here's the first of a series of posts I hope to do regularly, not-so-cleverly punning on '90s cereal commercials, with each one profiling a different hop. I'm going to try to focus mostly on hops that I know well (as a drinker and a brewer), so that I can give you some actual original thought as opposed to just regurgitating facts I've found on the internet.
Anyway, each GHMH post will feature a couple of things: a picture of the (whole-cone) hops in question, where the hop is from, the alpha acid content, the characteristic flavors/aromas imparted by the hop, a beer or beers which strongly feature that hop, and my own thoughts/additional tidbits. Alpha acids, in case you were curious, are the compounds in the hops which add bitterness to beer. The higher the alpha content, the more bitter the hop; for reference, above 10% generally denotes a pretty bitter hop.
Cascade Hops
Origin: USA
Alpha Acid Content: 4.5-7%
Flavor/Aroma: Citrus, Floral, Grapefruit
Example Beer(s): Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Deschutes Mirror Pond
Other Thoughts: When I talk about Cascade hops, you might hear me use the word "venerable", and that's with good reason. The Cascade has been featured in hop forward American beers for decades now, and perhaps more the any other single hop, Cascades and their bright, citrusy flavors have helped drive the popularity of American IPAs and hoppy pale ales - and by extension, of American craft beer as a whole. Their moderate alpha content means they can serve any purpose for a beer (bittering, flavor, aroma), and they are among the most popular hops for a variety of styles.
