I was watching this mini documentary about Science Saru's work on The Ghost in the Shell and I am fucking delighted with how much time and creativity was allowed to the artists in the studio

you hear so many horror stories about the modern anime industry and see so much poor quality animation rushed to meet the deadline, somthing thats only allowed because they get to redo it for the dvd releases (kind of like video games being released buggy because they can patch it later) that its really refreshing to see this series get all this love and attention

wheres that post about how Masamune Shirow would only communicate with the animators via emailing photos of post it notes, and that it took like 4 days to get a response from him for any thing? that would explain why she couldn't just ask the guy directly if he used a photo of plastic or not lol

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

I found this on Tubi while chasing a whim. Or, perhaps a whisper in my ghost. I went in with approximately zero context beyond the knowledge that this is an anime classic, like Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Finding that Ghost in the Shell is a staple in my chosen trope of interest—the search to find what makes us human by talking about robots and androids—was a pleasant surprise. This film is undeniably one of those 90s Action Sci-Fi pieces that is a product of its time, but not in a bad way. The pacing is a little strange, and most of the film is ambience and vibrations to set your understanding of the emotional mindset that the protagonist lives in: the work she does, the environment she exists in, the social landscape, the futuristic architecture. The story takes its time letting you fall into the world, and then the climax occurs in monologue.

I do think that the artists spent more time and effort doing all the beautiful scenery and fight scenes than they did trying to make the monologues visually interesting. They did, however, do some interesting point of view shots in the climax that set it apart from all the other Talking Head scenes.

Ultimately, this is a visual experience. It's really pretty to watch. Even the gore is pretty. And I use 'pretty' to approximately mean artistic and well-composed, rather than cute.
