The pairing that this person was defending was not only shallow and hamfisted, but most likely deliberately so. It was a deconstruction; the creators of the work made it clear that it was never actually meant to last.
And not only is the male character tall, pale, and melancholic (read: immediate fandom favorite); and not only was the female character (read: protagonist) the one to move on (at which point, the batshippers concluded—despite lack of any real evidence to support this—that she had thus irreparably broken their fave’s heart)? She also ended up with the batshippers’ designated acceptable target, which must have seemed like stacking insult atop injury to them.
(It’s probably not difficult to guess the fandom. Or, for that matter, which crew is wanking.)
