Every once in a while I come across a place that is just so insanely strange and off-the-beaten-path that I cannot get it out of my mind, and I make it my goal to visit it.

And that is exactly what happened when I read about Houtouwan, an abandoned village on Shengshan Island, off the coast from Shanghai.
