THE HAUNTED FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH OF ALTON - The First Unitarian Church (1905) in Alton, Illinois is reportedly one of the Most Haunted places in a town with a reputation as being "One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America." Built upon the burnt-out ruins of two previous churches that were consumed by fire, the First Unitarian Church has stood at the top of Alton's "Heathen Hill" for more than a century. And during this period, the church has collected it's share of tragic stories and, perhaps, the remnant spirits connected to such events which echo across the expanse of time. From rumors of hidden "Underground Railroad" slaves dying in a pre-Civil War fire to the strange hanging death of Reverend Phillip Mercer in 1934, the tales of ghostly origins abound here. Reports of disembodied voices, mysterious music, ghostly touches, and spectral apparitions of a "Suited Man" (possibly Mercer's unsettled spirit) and a mysterious "Shadow Being" have been reported over the decades. Considered to be a highly active site by ghost hunters, my own recent night-long exploration proved revealing as I did, indeed, encounter a couple of unexplained anomalies (a glowing "ball of light" and a "touching sensation"). An intriguing historical place filled mysteries and secrets that remain Unknown, but to the Dead.
