Sleep Furiously (2008)
comme des garçons photographed by gideon koppel for the florence biennale, 1998

Gideon Koppel's documentary Sleep Furiously (2008) felt like an invitation to move in a leisurely way through a rural Welsh landscape, but each time I found myself lulled into quiet, something popped up to shake me awake... controversy in the community or a frenetic stop motion propulsion forward. I very much enjoyed being in the world of this film - the Trefeurig community - and feeling the complexity of that world... without commentary from the maker. I streamed the film from Amazon Prime. I watched it in stages... starting a few days ago and completing it this evening. It felt like I was living with the story during the time I was away from the screen. I can see myself returning to this one again.... to see what the articulate camera and the skillful sound design lead me to experience when I revisit.
I appreciate Peter Bradshaw's review in The Guardian:
This delicate, tonally complex film by Gideon Koppel is a documentary love-letter to Trefeurig, the Welsh farming community in Ceredigion where he grew up, and where his parents found refuge from Nazi Germany during the second world war. It is a rural society, outwardly placid and at one with a landscape of stunning beauty, but in fact in crisis.

Trailer for Sleep Furiously, Gideon Koppel's award-winning documentary on the quiet way of life in a rural Welsh community, with music from Aphex Twin. Perfect viewing for a cloudy afternoon.
