Ah, yes. That's definitely the shape of a crow...

Corvus, which is Latin for "crow," is one of the original 48 constellations set down by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century.

This constellation has been seen as a raven or crow since antiquity. The Babylonians saw it as a raven sitting on the tail of a serpent. But to the Greeks, the raven/crow was always associated with Apollo.

In one myth, the Crow tells the god Apollo that his lover, Coronis, had been unfaithful. In a fit of rage, Apollo turned the pure white raven's feather jet black. In another myth, a crow was sent by Apollo with a cup to fetch him some water. However, the crow stopped on the way to eat figs. Instead of telling Apollo the truth, the crow lied and said that a snake kept him from getting the water, while holding a snake in his talons as proof. Apollo, seeing through this ruse, flung the crow, cup, and snake into the sky. As further punishment, Apollo ensured that the crow would forever be thirsty and just out of reach of the cup.

In order of brightness, the named stars are:

Gienah (γ Corvi), a binary star system about 154 light years away. The primary star is a blue giant while its companion is probably a red dwarf. The name comes from the Arabic phrase al-janāħ al-ghirāb al-yaman meaning "the right wing of the crow."

Kraz (β Corvi) is a solitary yellow supergiant star about 146 light years away. Its name was given to it by the Czech astronomer Antonín Bečvář in 1951, although we have no idea what it means.

Algorab (δ Corvi) is a probable solitary star, a blue-white giant star about 87 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-ghuraab meaning "the crow."

Alchiba (α Corvi) is a binary star system consisting of a yellow-white giant and a red dwarf. The entire system lies about 49 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-xibā meaning "tent."

Windy and frigid cold this morning in the single digits but very clear. Finally able to a decent picture of the southern raven constellation Corvus to the bottom center here with the blue binary Gienah to the top right of the quadrilateral. I also highlighted the zodiacal Virgo above with the prominent blue binary Spica at the lowest point of the constellation on the ecliptic. Leo is to the top right of the picture

I’ve made it to day 2 with @oc-growth-and-development​‘s OC-tober prompts!

Today’s OC is Gienah. She was exiled from the sky because she withheld information during a court trial. Gienah was sentenced to 100 years on ground, which means while she was allowed to keep her wings, she is unable to use them to return until her sentence is done.

Something interesting about the mysterious Raven Queen, aka: 

Gienah was the traditional name of two stars, each marking a wing (Arabic al janāħ) of its constellation:

Gamma Corvi aka Gienah Corvi, in Corvus

Epsilon Cygni aka Gienah Cygni, in Cygnus

This reminds me of the duality between Raven / Winter Raven persona

And also Gienah’s connection with the black and ultimately white phases of the phoenix, her dominion over both sun and moon and her ambiguous nature...

Gienah is a character brimming with ‘duality’ symbolism, and her name reflects this subtly.

Constellation Cygnus

The constellation Cygnus appears at Zenith for Northern Hemisphere viewers during late August/early September around 12am. Noteworthy objects in Cygnus include stars Deneb, Gienah, Sadr and Albireo. 

“Cygnus is the 16th largest constellation in the night sky, occupying an area of 804 square degrees. It lies in the fourth quadrant of the northern hemisphere (NQ4) and can be seen at latitudes between +90° and -40°. The neighboring constellations are Cepheus, Draco, Lacerta, Lyra, Pegasus, and Vulpecula.

Cygnus has 10 stars with known planets and contains two Messier objects: Messier 29 (NGC 6913) and Messier 39 (NGC 7092). The brightest star in the constellation is Deneb, Alpha Cygni, which is also the 19th brightest star in the sky, with an apparent magnitude of 1.25. There are two meteor showers associated with the constellation: the October Cygnids and the Kappa Cygnids.” (Source)
