It wasn’t… too difficult to please Leonardo.
Sure, you had to deal with his yearning, and his poking, his prodding, questioning, hyperactivity, paranoia and clinginess— but truly..? it wasn’t THAT bad..
You had mastered the art of giving him just enough to keep him away without setting him off. You had a feeling things could get violent were you to reject him too harshly.. so you calculated your every response, playing this game of push and pull.
And it could be… almost fun, sometimes.
It’s not like you didn’t like Leo… to be honest, some of his actions could be a little charming. It was the tendencies that made you nervous…
“I love when you need me for things..~” he’d coo softly in your ear as he pulled you through a portal, his arm securely wrapped at your waist. You couldn’t tell which twisted your stomach more— making a physical transition through the cosmos to get back home, or the crooked smile on Leo’s face when he spoke in that eerily vague way.
“Well, here we are! Thanks for the favor, Leo!” You waved with a smile, and watched as the almost malicious look in his eye evaporated.
“Anything for you, mi linda~!” He raised his Odachi once more, before he paused, “You need anything else? I could grab something for you on my way out..” that spark of desire filled his smirk again— it seemed between the two of you, it helped him more than it did you.
“Hmm… maybe.. a glass of water?” You had quickly learned that small favors kept him placated. Calm, that’s how you preferred the blue-clad turtle, instead of the alternative..
“Sure thing!” It was moments before the water was in your hand, “I’d hate for you to go thirsty… unless it’s for me, of course.” He flexed as his tone grew playful, a cue that you were supposed to laugh, which you did.
His cues weren’t difficult to follow.
-
“Who’s this guy?” He asked as a text notification pulled up on your phone, Leo’s brows furrowed, voice low as his hand tightened on your device. He had been looking at a meme you showed him, but now with this new person, he suddenly had diverted attention. It wasn’t difficult to guess— he was likely jealous. Leo had you labeled in his mind as his own, which you didn’t agree with, but there wasn’t much you could do. Besides, It was easy enough to quell his worries, even if you had no plans to indulge him further than friendship.
“Oh, it’s just my brother.” You shrugged, “He’s letting me know what time we’re planning on hanging out tomorrow.”
Leo’s furrowed brow turned to a crease, it seemed his thought process had been diverted. Not as much of a threat as he thought. But that didn’t stop a frown from forming on his face, “I thought tomorrow was movie night…” he met your gaze with a heartbroken look.
It was easy to see through the lie, he just wanted more time together— which wasn’t exactly a problem. At least he wasn’t blatantly asking you to abandon your brother.
“Oh, don’t worry! The hangout seems to be earlier morning, we still got time for the movie.” You smiled at him, and you could swear for a split second his eyes flickered with barely suppressed darkness.
“Need a ride?” He smiled again, desperate to be needed. You knew that look. At first it had seemed as though he was just eager to be helpful— but now you know it was for a deeper, more sinister reason.
Control.
“Sure! That way I can hand you the snacks I picked out.” It wasn’t difficult to give him control, to let him think he could play you like a puppet. It kept you out of trouble, and kept him reasonably satisfied.
But you didn’t meet your brother the next day, he had canceled, and therefore you and Leo got ice cream instead. It was still nice to have a day out..
And yet… If you could go back…
You’d never have agreed to his lie.
As a matter of fact..
you’d wish you never had met him.
“Home?” He stared at you after that movie night, with feigned surprise you knew all too well. “Yeah! I got an early morning.” You stood up from the couch, and began to gather your things. “I was under the impression it was gonna be a sleepover..” he frowned, eyes downcast and averted. “Do you really need to leave so soon?” He met your eyes with, admittedly, a rather impressive display of puppy dog eyes— but you had grown rather immune to them after the many, many times he’d used them.
“Ahhh, I wish I could stay.” You laughed softly, “I have to get to bed.”
“You could stay in mine—“ Leo coughed, “my room! You could stay in my room!” He beamed, rising to his feet to join you should you try to leave. You knew in these cases, he could get quite persistent…
You fought a sigh. At least he hadn’t shown any signs of malice that night. Besides, you’d stayed in his room before, under similar circumstances.. and It’s not like he would do anything you couldn’t predict already.
“I suppose I could stay a little longer.. given that you could just portal me home.” You laughed.
“Yeah.. portal you..” he didn’t.
..
You know you went home that night.
You recall it. Very clearly. Saying goodnight to Leo, brushing your teeth, falling asleep next to your plushies..
So why were you laid in a bed with blue silk sheets? It seemed your plushies were scattered around you, as if dropped from above, your favorite blanket still wrapped around your legs. Everything should have been the same— and yet, there were distinct weights on your wrists.
God, and the pounding in your head… you were so heavy.. so tired.. why did you feel so tired..?
Looking around further, you realized.. this wasn’t your room. The pages on the walls weren’t your posters— no, these were nerdier— you only had one Jupiter Jim poster. And you didn’t have any comics… or an old Nintendo 64– you didn’t cover your windows… and you didn’t live in a train cart.
The grogginess evaporated within milliseconds as realization struck down your spine like ice cold water.
The posters, the sheets, the game set.
This was Leo’s room.
And the weight on your wrists wasn’t exhaustion.
It was handcuffs.
Your blood ran cold… you never expected it to come to this. this was.. this was fine, right? You knew Leo. You knew of the darker side in his head, you could convince him to let you go, right? Sure, he was clearly insane, but it’s not like he’s never listened to reason before, right?
Click—
Shhhhhhhhhk…
You whip your head around, eyes wide.
The door slowly slid open, revealing dark eyes barely illuminated by the glowing crescent marks behind a blue mask. As he stepped into the room, the air felt heavy, what greeted you was a familiar, crooked smile.
“You’re awake..!” A voice cooed, dripping with molasses. The dark figure stepped into the room with a cold echo, and slowly slid the train cart to a locked position. The freak of nature slowly crept his way towards you, that askew smile ever so slowly illuminated the closer he got, “Well… almost awake…” a cold, three fingered hand pinched your cheek, pulling you closer to meet the malicious eyes of Leonardo.
“See? I told you it’d be a sleepover…”
“Just… not how long it would be..”
“Leo..” you found your voice to be uncharacteristically raspy, but you trusted your knowledge of your friend, “what is all this..?”
“Awww…” he cupped your cheeks, “mi vida, you are adorable when you try to reason with me.” His head cocked to the side, a ripple of light flickered up his crescent marks “and I’ve so enjoyed playing along… but it’s time you came home, and stay home.”
“Playing along? Leo—“
“Oh, you know,” the creature shrugged, his shoulders lax and careless, “Letting you spend time with others, explore school, resist my advances… allowing you to feel in control..”
“Leo..! These chains— I have school, work— friends! Family! You can’t truly believe I can just stay in here!” You shook your head, eyes wide and hands tight in fists.
“Oh of course! Naturally, I’ve had everything and everyone in your life.. properly arranged.” his eyes squinted, a laugh huffed from his lips, “you didn’t seriously think your work wasn’t scheduling you for no reason, did you?” he shook his head, eyes closed for only a fraction of a second before they locked on you again, “your brother didn’t cancel on you for no reason…” he trailed off when he noticed your frown, the corner of his lips turned down as well. “Your room hasn’t been cleaned for no reason..”
“Oh no..” his sicky sweet tone returns, a false sympathy seeded in his voice, “you’re frowning…! Are those tears..? I can fix that!” He grins, “what did the tiger say to the mouse before trapping it?” He leaned closer, a chuckle under his breath like he just couldn’t wait any longer to say it. Like a tiger about to bite.
“You’ve made a grave mouse-take…” he laughed— you didn’t. “Hey.. kinda like you..! Not that I’m complaining.”
“You played right into my arms...” He raised a hand to your cheek again— you pulled your head away, eyes fierce as they glared daggers up at them. “No? Didn’t like that one?” He grinned, “don’t worry… I’ve got millions more jokes!” He stood straight again, his shadow towered over your form, blocking out the only light in the room, just like your quickly diminished hopes. his eyes were sharp and cold. “Besides…we have the rest of our lives for me to make you smile!”
“It shouldn’t be.. too difficult..”
