Gil Gerard 1943-2025 RIP
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Gil Gerard, I loved his take on Buck Rogers in the 80s. I had the honor of meeting him and Erin Gray at a con many years ago. I presented him with this artwork, which he had me sign in exchange for him signing mine. It was cool that he wanted to exchange autographs. He was a charming and warm-hearted person, and I'm glad I had the chance to meet him.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Buster Crabbe as Brigadier Gordon and Gil Gerard as Captain Buck Rogers in the episode Planet of the Slave Girls that originally aired September 27, 1979.
Buster Crabbe played Lt. Buck Rogers in the 1939 Universal Serial. He also played Flash Gordon in three Flash Gordon serials in 1936, 1938 and 1940. He Also played Tarzan in the serial Tarzan the Fearless (1933).
I've had this open in my tabs for some days, and it remains one of my very favorite title sequences. (And as it was almost certainly written by my buddy David Gerrold, even more a favorite because of that.)
The gorgeous circular "traveling mattes" will never not be a favorite of mine. They were a delightful way to evoke the slightly-retro quality of the IP and the storyline.
And particularly: Look at the shot they chose for Gil Gerard's title credit. THAT SLOW SMILE, OMG. :)
Actor Gil Gerard, best known for TV’s “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century” (1979-1981), died today, December 16th, 2025 at the age of 82.
His wife, Janet, posted that he passed away after a battle with “a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer.”
A post on Gil’s Facebook account reads:
“My life has been an amazing journey. The opportunities I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the love I have given and received have made my 82 years on the planet deeply satisfying. … Don’t waste your time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love. See you out somewhere in the cosmos.”
