365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out Villains - One Villain, Every Day, All Year…
December 24th - Toyman
Three different individuals have operated under the name of The Toyamn. The first is a brilliant inventor named Winslow Schott. A difficult childhood left Schott with something of an arrested emotional development and he used his mechanical acumen to build sophisticated and frequently destructive toys. He saw the world as his playground and paid little attention to the damage he caused. This led to multiple encounters with Superman and Schott (now known as ‘the terrible Toyman’) became a reoccurring foe of the Man of Steel. Superman was ultimately able to navigate Schott toward using his skills in a more prosocial manner, creating ingenious toys for children in need; and this ultimately led to his retiring from super villainy. Some time thereafter, the mantle of The Toyman was taken up by a criminal by the name of Jack Nimball. This new Toyman either created his own weaponized toys or stole the designs from Schott. In either case, he became a foe of Superman and served as a member of The Legion of Doom. Schott ultimately came to feel that Nimball was sullying the name of Toyman; hence he killed Nimball and resumed his career as a super villain, once more battling Superman as well as other costumed heroes. Scott would go on to become a member of The Superman Revenge Squad as well as The Injustice League and The Secret Society of Super Villains. Hiro Okamura briefly operated as the third Toyman. Young Hiro possess an uncanny skill for robotics and built giant androids. He battled Superman and Batman and later Robin and Superboy before ultimately choosing to be a hero rather than villain. There were hints that Hiro may have been a sophisticated android built by Schott, but the matter has been left unresolved. In the post Nu52 universe, Hiro has changed his name to Toymaster. A version of Toyman featured in the 1970’s Wonder Woman television show portrayed by actor Frank Gorshin; another version appeared in the Superboy series played by actor/comedian Gilbert Godfried; Actor Sherman Hemsley played the character in the series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman; while Chris Gauthier portrayed the character in the series Smallville; and actor Henry Czerny played the character in the series Supergirl. The original Toyman first appeared in the pages of Action Comics #64 (1943); The Jack Niball version first appeared in Action Comics #432 (1974); and Hiro Okamura first appeared in Superman #127 (1997).

The Nasty Show: An Evening of Smut Comedy
The Just for Laughs hit, The Nasty Show, returns this year at Montreal’s Metropolis theatre for evenings of filth until July 26th. For an uncomfortable perspective, I take my mom on this wacky ride.
