Bertha knows all too well she soon must decide whether it's no longer viable to remain George's bride. Too long they've been playing this game of love chicken, but the heart of the matter is he makes her heart quicken. And then there's the subject of her young paramour… The question remains: which of them does her heart really adore?

It's been many long months now, she's fallen in love with a beautiful angel who's been sent from above, an elegant dancer from the City's Ballet. It's late in December, the one fateful day George returns to New York seeking her mercy, pleading his misdeeds had been that of Circe.

People 'round town all know his misdeeds, though the truth of the matter has been lost in the weeds. He's gallavanting around, no thought of his wife, the fate of their marriage on the blade of a knife. At least, that's the excuse so he might misbehave, soon he's drunken and stumbling, then lost 'mongst the waves…

Day 2: Secret Affair

Behind whispering curtains and locked bedroom doors,

George Russell lays down with a paid and bought whore.

For many long months now, they've been in turmoil -

tempers long building, a pot set to boil…

Still, Bertha's at home with their infant granddaughter;

she loves him still, but there's blood in the water.

Pair of Candelabra, silver (1884) Tiffany & Co. (American, 1837–present) produced these monumental silver candelabra under the artistic direction of Edward C. Moore (American, 1827–1891). As virtuosic examples of Gilded Age silver, the pieces feature sinuous floral and vegetal ornament influenced by Moore's collection of global art.

Commissioned to illuminate high-society ballrooms by pioneering collector Mary Jane Sexton Morgan (American, 1823–1885), the project utilized over 3,000 ounces of silver, marking one of the firm's most technically ambitious undertakings.
