I had a private concert with 60,000 friends.
As I sit in my office on the monday after the Taylor Swift concert, I catch myself thinking about how I am still blown away by everything I've experienced this weekend. This wasn't my first TS concert, it was actually my third.
I went to the Speak Now tour in Boston in 2011, and the Red tour in Tampa, FL, in 2013 (Fun Fact: I decided to go to the Red concert at the last minute, and none of my friends could accompany me. I wasn't about to miss a Tay Tay show just because I had no one to go with, so I went by myself, and had the time of my life!)
Both concerts were amazing, theatrical, everything I expected from Taylor and more. But there was something different about this one. The Broadway-inspired sets that gave place to a more abstract scenery. The lights. A constellation of lights that turned the audience into a part of the set. Her performance is even better. But that's still not it. It's also not the different genre, it was deeper than that. She is more musically mature, yes. But there was something different about... her.
For the first time in the 8 years I've been her fan, I felt connected to her. Taylor spoke to the audience a lot. And I am sure there are many parts that are scripted, as expected in an event like this. But there were times where she spoke about such delicate and intricate emotions, that you could see her heart right up on her figurative sleeve. 60,000 people in a stadium, and I felt like she was speaking directly to me. She was there. She was absorbing every second, enjoying each moment. She was thinking about the different problems her audience could be facing in life, and what their routines were like. She was aware of the people right below her on the floor seats, and the people on the nose bleed section. She was honest. She was reachable. She was real. In my opinion, that was the best part of the night.
As my sister put it, it was more than a concert, it was a therapy session. Because of the things she said. Because of her helping us acknowledge that real life was out there waiting for us, but we were going to forget about it for a couple of hours and be in our own little world, shaking it off.
