Gilli Moon Unveils Epic Video for “Fire”

In Gilli Moon's visual for her single “Fire” off of her new album “Beautiful Mess Vol. 2” it is clear that Gilli wants us to not only witness, but feel her passion and seduction. In comparison to tracks in which Gilli has previously released, it is nice to see the artist divulge into and adapt to different techniques and genres of music while remaining true to her pop and alternative talent. One aspect of the visual that really catches the eyes, is the seductive and sensual body movements throughout the video.

Aside from being seductive, the visual also delivers a good representation of the message behind the music. “Fire” is more than a flame. “Fire” is the energy, it is the passion, and it is the love in which we all carry within us. Gilli wants us to not only realize this fire within ourselves, but also allow her fire to consume us. By letting Gilli Moon’s fire into our minds we can better understand her journey. Gilli Moon, an Australian singer-songwriter, has just released a unique music video for the first track off of her latest album, “Fire.” Dating back to the early 2000s, Gilli’s discography is filled with catchy and nostalgic pop anthems that are relatable yet innocent. This track in particular, though, brings us to the wild side.

“This song is about truly honoring your passion and sensuality. It's a song about 'wanting' and being uninhibited in sharing your feelings for someone. It's the 1st single of my new album release, beautiful mess - vol 1. I really love the beat. I’m inspired more and more lately with EDM and this has just enough of that mixed with pop and always my alternative twist.”

The video truly brings us to that level - as it begins with a shot of a flower blooming, then transitions into multiple shots of professional dancers fading in and out of heat-related images. It grabs your attention from the beginning, showcasing the sensuality of the song through passionate choreography from Gilli and her dancers.

This video emulates such a fervent vibe that reflects the nature of the song. Gilli will capture you with unique visuals, dancing, and lighting, all while enjoying her amazing song!

1. What have you been working to promote lately? I've just released my new double album beautiful mess. It's my first studio album in 10 years and encompasses 12 songs aside - 24 tracks in total. The first release was January 21, and the 2nd release is February 19. I really wanted to give my listeners an aural binge listening explosion, to immerse into my latest creations, emotions and expression.

2. Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you..

I really have loved, all my life, Rickie Lee Jones' 'Chuck E's In Love'. So much so, I covered it on my album in my own way. Ever since I was a young girl, I would sing along to the song. I love the free spirit of Rickie, her ability to write her own songs in an era where most artists didn't write their own songs, and the rolling pop/rnb sounds of the song. It also meant a lot to me to learn about Chuck of Hollywood, when I moved to LA from Sydney nearly 20 years ago. Just feeling the charm of the song as I lived my life here, and eventually incorporating the song into my live set, plus a happenstance opportunity I had opening for Rickie up in Sacramento, made this song on my album a 'meant to be'. 3. What does it mean to you to be a woman making music / in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music? I never really worried about being a female in the music business until I actually started to do things by myself as a DIY artist, and record label executive (my own label of course), that I would sometimes get men intimidated by my strength. But I quickly got over that! Without a doubt, I have definitely taken on the challenge to blaze a trail for other women to feel empowered to follow their dreams in the music business, as many have struggled in a male dominated industry. In my first decade here, I pioneered a lot of the DIY digital music movement in my own way, championing female music with my label's 'Females On Fire' album compilation which celebrated 100 female singer-songwriters, co-producing the first Los Angeles Women's Music Festival and starting a songwriting membership platform called Songsalive! But even after all that I feel I'm at the beginning of the road because the music business has changed so much, that I can barely keep up with it. In 'beautiful mess', I explore emotions and concepts about female empowerment, loving who you are, and owning your power. I always want to instill that in my art and music and hope to inspire others. 4. What is the most personal thing you have shared in your music or in your artist brand as it relates to being female? My new album also speaks to the struggle of being a new mother (I had twins after a long time trying to conceive) and the message here is: it's all OK. I never did this before: authentically show struggle. I was always about strength and being defiant. But some of my songs, including 'The Light' and 'Everything'll Be OK" is exactly about motherhood. The former shares the struggle of raising twins in their toddler years. I really didn't know if I was going to make it. Lack of sleep, not knowing how to handle two children at the same time, and I lost my sense of self for some time. But through making the music, (writing, recording and ultimately releasing) I think it's a cathartic experience and of course I'm finding so many other women out there who have struggled like I have. My message is this... "You are beautiful. Even within the mess of life, Be You." 5. Who was the first female artist you saw that made you want to create music / be in the business?

This sounds absolutely ridiculous because I was 8 years old, but it has to be Olivia Newton John. I grew up listening to her in our mutual homeland of Australia (though she's much older than me of course). Who can't forget Grease, and Xanadu with those roller skates, and of course her Physical record. I wanted to be on that stage in my hot pink ripped t-shirt singing Physical too. Right down to the fact that she found her success by leaving her country and coming to America, I guess I've followed in her footsteps. 6. What was the most challenging thing you have had to face as a female artist? Honestly I think following my dream and coming to America has been the most challenging. But I did it. I knew no one here in the biz when I got here. I had to also overcome visas and the ability to even work in this country, let alone acclimate to a new culture. So, then doing it DIY and releasing 7 albums on my own label after that was a walk in the park. I don't know if any of this has anything to do with being female. But it's my story.

7. If you could form an all woman super-group who would play in it? I would love to see an all-girl piano playing group with Tori Amos, Lady Ga Ga, Alicia Keys and me. Ha ha. That would be totally rad and a great live performance. I remember seeing Elton John and Billy Joel on stage twice, dueling pianos. I would love to see a show with, like, 4 or 5 dueling pianos and an all-female cast!

Gilli Moon Shares Brilliant New Record

Australian singer/songwriter Gilli Moon is starting off the new year in the best way with the release of her eighth studio album, Beautiful Mess. The title of the album is very poetic, describing how life is for Moon with all the titles she holds, but honestly, I think everyone can relate to life being an insane mess, but loving it anyway. I know I can. This album has so many components to it when it comes to genre, instrumentation, and vocal techniques. It has elements of indie pop and Moon’s own unique sound to create an enjoyable vibe that is like nothing I’ve ever heard before. With 2 covers and 10 original songs, Beautiful Mess Vol. 1 has a sound that I can’t wait to hear more of. There is a lot of contrast in sound when it comes to the different singles on the first volume of Beautiful Mess. There are songs like “Fire” and “Bring It” that have a very electronic pop sound and there are songs like “Summer Heat” and “Chuck E’s In Love” that have a blues sound. The album does not fit into one genre. It has so many different emotions packed into each part of it that gives everyone something to enjoy. Beautiful Mess is a perfect example of why Gilli Moon has the critical acclaim she does. She has a completely original sound that she showcases beautifully with the songs she writes and the covers she does. She doesn’t hold anything back when it comes to showing her emotions through her music, whether good or bad, which I really respect as a listener. With this only being the first volume of Beautiful Mess, I’m anxious to see what Gilli Moon has in store for us when she releases volume 2 on February 19th.

If I could predict what the last few months would become, when I wrote my last newsletter in February, I probably would have dug a hole and sat there. Oh, wait,... that's exactly what I did. The enormity and toll of the global Coronavirus pandemic, along with many fringe but critically important key events during all this, has really made me look at my pursuit of creativity as a way of life. On some days, I thought, "what is the point?" Hunkering down with my 2 beautiful children, husband and dog, we literally haven't left our house in 4 1/2 months. We celebrated birthdays via zoom and just played the waiting game. On other days, I felt compelled to express myself, the only way I know how, through song 🎵

Luckily I chose the latter, because through my musical medium, I realized this is the best way I can contribute. Creativity gives us the ability to bring people together, take a stand, represent a loud voice from the quiet, and also self-heal. I don't know about you, but going through such a consistent period like this can build silent trauma in all of us. I mean, who's really prepared for a Pandemic?! And so, these are the 3 creations I could come up with. Read on.

The Wait

This piano instrumental with accompanying video is my emotional response to our lives right now and how my family and I are witnessing and coping. I hope you enjoy it. Actually it's the first piano instrumental I've released (correct, no voice, which is usually my signature). This is my response to the current times. It was hard. I started on the piano. Then moved to visuals with the video. I tried to encapsulate the complete cycle of our family’s response and feelings about the Coronavirus. About isolation, About determination. About health. About love. About hope.

I killed a fish. I didn’t mean to. It was the last straw in a series of feeling helpless to make any change in the world right now. As an artist I feel so much. Covid-19 has been raging for months now. George Floyd is murdered and I feel for our Black community. I feel for the atrocities and racism against nations for centuries. I feel like whatever I say, doesn’t make a difference. I feel terrible I killed a fish. And then I thought, it’s ok to feel. As an artist I have a higher mission in my music and creativity to raise awareness, compassion, love and unity amongst humanity. And so I have shared some of my thoughts today on how all artists can do the same. It was hard. I started on the piano. Then moved to visuals with the video. I tried to encapsulate the complete cycle of our family’s response and feelings about the Coronavirus. I wake up and get ready for the day. Seemingly a woman of society, with makeup and all. But things have gone awry. I yearn to express the juxtaposition and dualism of it all. The innocence lost. The Innocence.The duality of womanhood - Beauty, yet covering it with the mask. I cannot express my true self. Everything is behind the ‘mask’. My daughter too is victim of this. And she, like me, witness the tragedies on a daily basis. Beauty dying. People dying.Sadness and loss.Takes your breath away. Takes people’s breaths away.Observing this from afar, in isolation, as the Virus plays out on the world stageWe are wrapped in our plastic bubbles of home isolation. Sick people wrapped in plastic. The desire to escape from sickness. Escape from isolation. The determination to not accept it will be me, or my daughter next. Instead we choose beauty. We choose health. We choose love. We see Nature breathing. Living. The World must go on. And it will. Connecting to the earth, to Mother Nature. To Hope. To Beauty. To life. To our innocence. To Joy. To Love. But I haven’t lost hope. I know this too shall pass, and so I share a sense of hope in this all too. I hope you enjoy the music and the video as much as I’ve felt the cathartics in making it. xo, gilli moon
