PSA on James Bond
I’ve heard a lot about how we should let James Bond be a man, and just make a different franchise, and give Gillian Anderson her own badass spy character, that just making the existing 007 doesn’t solve all the problems for women in cinema.
1. Believe me, if there was a an original spy franchise with Gillian Anderson at the helm, I would watch the hell out of it. That would be GREAT. But currently, no one is making spy movies with women at the helm, because people don’t think they will make money.
2. If James Bond was a set character, I might not take chagrin with this argument. However, James Bond is NOT a set character. James Bond has been played by several different actors over the last forty years, so the name “James Bond” has been the name (code name, so to speak) of MULTIPLE CHARACTERS. So if a woman, or a person of color played James Bond, that wouldn’t be out of character, because James Bond is not a single, set character.
Not only that, but even if James Bond WAS a set character, the argument against a person of color playing Bond is completely invalid. No one seems to find any problem with white people playing characters of color in film adaptations, but the minute a black stormtrooper shows up in Star Wars people throw a hissy fit. So if you want to get your panties in a knot about Idris Elba possibly playing Bond, you must also be outraged next time we see a white guy play the king of Egypt, or the prince of Persia, or whatever.
3. Stop comparing a female 007 to a male Lara Croft, for the very reasons I have stated above. Not only that, Lara Croft is basically the sexualized, female counterpart of Indiana Jones. You HAVE a male Lara Croft, who is FAR more famous and far more respected as a character than she is. The point is, film studios aren’t willing to make an original spy franchise with Gillian Anderson, no matter how awesome it is. They won’t do it.
4. I’ve heard a lot of complaining about how this won’t solve sexism in film. It won’t make a difference until we get original female spy movies. I don’t expect it to solve all the problems for women in film. I don’t NEED it to. That’s not the only reason we want Gillian to be the next Bond. We want Gillian to be the next Bond because she’s awesome, she could kick ass, and IT WOULD BE FUN. IT WOULD BE A GOOD MOVIE.
It doesn’t have to solve every single problem currently facing women in cinema. Just by being a good movie, by being fun and interesting it’s worth doing.
5.The very reason we need feminism is because no one will take these ideas seriously if we say they’d just be a good idea. When a man helms a spy movie, it’s perfectly normal, but the minute there’s a woman in the lead role, the streets fill with protesters because God forbid an action flick have a “feminist agenda.” Because it’s always a fucking agenda when a woman does anything.
And you know what? This film wouldn’t have to “make a feminist statement” if people treated women leading action flicks with the same respect as men. If we could see Gillian as Bond JUST FOR FUN, if that was treated as casually as Tom Cruise in Mission:Impossible, then it wouldn’t have to be a “feminist statement.” Because it would be normal. But as long as a woman heading an action film is considered a huge fucking deal, considered “feminist propaganda” or whatever, it’s going to make a statement.
And weeping fanboys, go ahead and whine about it as much as you want. If you don’t ever want to see Gillian as Bond, then don’t complain when women get their own action franchises. Don’t complain about “feminist agendas” everywhere and simultaneously refuse to normalize women in action roles, because there wouldn’t have to be a statement about it if you didn’t throw a goddamn fit every time it happened.
Beyond her extraordinary acting career, Gillian is beautiful, intense and rebellious - what more could we want from the next Bond? (345 signatures on petition)
