Hunting the northern lights and watching them dance and flicker in the sky, while lying on his back, in his bed, inside his Igloo, was one of the most rewarding experiences he ever allowed himself to indulge in.
Turns out that when he opted out of the suffering, he was pretty damn good at amusement and enjoyment. As a matter of fact, that Aurora Borealis sighting in particular felt a lot like happiness to him. Only one thing was missing to feel perfect. More like, only one person. Maybe two.
The same thing happened the night before, when he was lying on a frozen lake in the middle of a snowy forest, and the northern lights came over him like a huge luminous tent in every color and kept going for about 30 minutes straight. The feeling of just lying there in complete silence with the Aurora Borealis serpenting above him, reminding him he was still alive, there was still hope, and nothing was set in stone, because it all could change in an instant, and it all usually did, for better and for worse. That had been a constant in his life, but that was also a positive thing, actually. A liberating thing.
Carmy found it impossible to describe how it felt to be so free outside a kitchen for the first time in his life, alone and loving it. He could see how those green and blue lights were also shedding light on his very soul at that moment. What he saw in the sky above that lake represented for him all that he had missed out on by not taking risks, by using his chef's whites as armour and his knives as shields. He had made something sordid out of something wonderful by depriving it of the one thing that made it worth it.
Syd had connected him back to that silver lining; he was now ready to really see it, fully.
❝The symphony of the pan making the caramelized lamb sing a sweet song that only Carmy and her knew the melody of was soothing in the midst of all the mayhem.
“You good, chef?” Carmy asked, as he instructed her, to hear the music that came from the pan being embraced by the fire, under her command.
She followed his guidance and then smiled for him. Syd could hear the music alright. But what she loved the most was his voice, reassuring her. Holding her without touching her.❞
Chapter 1´s excerpt:
Once a month had gone by, Carmy offered her to move in till her permanent supportive housing program allowed her to lease an apartment, but she didn´t accept it.
Carmy insisted, and Aphrodite kept refusing to crash on his couch. She said that as soon as she got a job, which she hoped was soon, because she had had several interviews lately, she was gonna get her place and problem solved.
Little did Carmy know that most of the interviews never ended in a callback because when they found out she was a doll, they dismissed her. She preferred to keep this from him and put on an easy breezy front for him. He already had a lot on his plate as it was, Aphrodite thought, after hearing the short version of his story.
What Carmy didn´t know, either, was that Aphrodite didn´t wanna accept his offer because she was falling for him.
The night before that Eureka moment in the back alley, as he tried to make tender love to a ghost of his past that slid into his bed, a part of him ran away with his business partner, and there was nothing tender about what he wanted to do to her. Ravenous was more like it. His mind wandered to all those times when he had denied himself pleasure, softness, want— and so he wanted to make home of every hungry kiss he wanted nothing more than to plant on her dark skin. All the while, this woman, the little nerdy girl from high school he used to have a crush on, had grown to be, was whimpering beneath him, voicing out her climax and right after his own release he couldn´t help but to punish her by denying her his warm embrace, just because she wasn´t Sydney. He turned his back on her and pretended to fall asleep, still thinking about the woman he really wanted, needed, and was beginning to love.
