26. GING NANG BOYZ

Ging Nang Boyz is one of the most daring punk rock bands ever. Based out of Japan and originally consisting of members Kazunobu Mineta (lead vocals & guitar), Takahiro “Chin” Nakamura (lead guitar & back-up vocals), Shinya Abiko (bass & back-up vocals), and Murai Mamoru (Drums) - this band has gained an enormous following in Japan due to the lightning-in-a-bottle nature of the band’s overall legacy.

Ging Nang Boyz are one of the most in-your-face and hard-to-handle bands that managed to develop an absolutely earth-shaking amount of sincerely devoted fans (which is a sight to behold). Stylistically-speaking, Ging Nang Boyz are a fascinating blend of the likes of The Stooges, early Weezer, and Buzzcocks. Despite the band’s tendency to have pop/acoustic sensibilities (to balance out the brash and over-powering raw punk rock power), the band has become notorious for being highly controversial.

Ging Nang Boyz has an intensely non-conformist approach in regards to their music. They can write your average catchy sing-along-song, but can also do it in a highly unorthodox manner (for instance: utilizing their own titilation with perverse humor and explicit angst while also displaying aggressive delight amidst the chaos). This band is one of those bands that “takes it there”, meaning - they’ve been arrested for public nudity during shows (which, for anyone who may not be aware, is taken just as seriously, if not more so, in Japan due to the country’s overall customary value for proper manners), they’ll have taboo sexuality in their music videos [which still makes me kinda squeamish hahaha], and they put a herculean amount of energy into their live shows which displays their overall willingness to break the mold).

The developing momentum of this band had become a force of nature (especially since the band went from nothing to becoming so monumental). This well-earned fame & recognition only added to the band’s growing frenzy. This, however, did not exploit or manipulate the band’s very punk rock attitude (which does not exclude ugliness and obnoxiousness). Ging Nang Boyz express themselves like the cooped up kid who has been told to ‘sit down and shut up’ their whole life and have finally “RELEASED THE KRACKEN” so-to-speak (hahahaha).

Kazunobu Mineta (who is also an actor apparently) is the heart & soul of Ging Nang Boyz. His almost over-the-top sense of melodrama mixed with his snarling snot-faced roars (amidst the roaring of his superbly visceral bandmates) proves to be a true feat of strength (as he leaps and somersaults across stages with said bandmates, while receiving various injuries and wearing the occasional bandage here and there). The original four members are unmatched in their strength - especially with their explosive live shows and superior level of high-energy performances.

Despite Nakamura, Abika, and Mamoru leaving the band, and a rather deafening silence during the band’s hiatus (for many of the fans anyway) - Mineta has continued the journey of leading the Ging Nang Boyz into 2019. That original line-up is still unmatched (in my humble opinion) by any other bands in punk rock (perhaps other genres as well) in terms of their sheer electricity & raw power (although there are so many bands out there it’d be difficult to realistically & objectively quantify and conclude such a notion). This band has just as much fun as they have crazy antics and their hearts are as big as their howls - a refreshingly liberating punk rock band (in typical punk fashion - “Their early sh!t was so much better than their new sh!t” hahaha).
