Old Ampersand woodblock printing
At the St. Bride printing workshops yesterday I had the opportunity to print some wonderful mismatched ampersands from their historic collection using one of their Vandercook Pre-Presses.
Now some of these large woodblocks are well over 100 years old so despite packing out the paper and adjusting for the slight printing height differences, two of the blocks had sunken deeply in the middle leaving a void on the print.

ART SELLS Exhibition today. If by chance you're in London today (which admittedly is only about 10% of you) do take a look. Over 60 artists from all over the world who work in advertising. I had a sneak peak yesterday and there is some brilliant work on show. Village Underground, 54 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3PQ I'll tweet some images later today on: @Ginjam
Type Worship: Plucky No. 5 selected for exhibition
The Higher Pitch - ART SELLS exhibition showcases artwork by people working in the advertising world and aims to encourage greater creative freedom in the industry by exposing the restrained talent within it.
On Thursday 15th September, for one day and one night only, ART SELLS will take up residence at renowned art venue, Village Underground in Shoreditch, East London. The venue is a converted Victorian warehouse with creative studios and offices housed in old tube trains on the roof of the building, making it the perfect venue for displaying the art in advertising.
I met the founders of Higher Pitch last week: Mel Fong-Brown, Head of Sales for Rokkit and Suzie Quill, Art Director at Saatchi & Saatchi (Mel and Suz) Mel’s belief is that: “Art sells – it has done for centuries. By putting artist talent at the heart of advertising we believe we can produce truly inspiring and successful creative work.” Mel and Suz commissioned Illustrator and designer Anthony Burrill to design the exhibition invitation. Anthony is also an artist also working in advertising.
In preparation for displaying the work John Jones, (framers to the stars), have framed the Plucky No.5 and written a flattering review: “Contemporary artist James Clarke has produced a limited edition of 25 works by blending the latest technology with traditional craft skills. ‘Plucky No. 5’ was initially hand-drawn, then redrafted digitally, before being printed and hand-embellished, creating an expressive character that oozes personality…” Read more

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who has followed, commented, reblogged & 'liked' posts since I started this blog. I never had any idea six months ago that this would become so much fun, or so popular!
A special thanks to a few of Type Worship's followers who were supportive back when I first started going (always dangerous as I'm bound to forget people):

“Plucky 5” in full production
It’s taken a while but now all 25 have been printed, I’m spraying the silver and gloss details. Until the silver is dry, it’s very delicate work.
The design is around A1 in size. Archival print onto Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper.
