The triangular square, 500 square meters wide, is made of limestone, with parts in black basalt and carbonate stone from Trani. The flooring contains various writings: vertical, zenith, collective, the cardinal points, horizon, spiral and others in Sardinian language: sa pedra (stone), su fogu (fire), s'aria (air), s'acqua (water), su sobi (sun), sa lu(n)a (moon), sa roda (wheel). There are also other symbols carved on the stone and others that we will see. Ales (Sardinia). Gramsci square. Collective use plan of Gio Pomodoro. Walking through Ales. Slim guide for passengers and wayfarers. Let's go back a few meters and examine the Antonio Gramsci square. Above it in 1977 the work "Piano d'uso collettivo" was created by the sculptor Gio Pomodoro. However, the square named after Gramsci had existed since the 1960s. It was a common square with a brick floor and some trees. To build it, "Su lacu de is bois" (the watering place of the oxen) had been demolished. It occupied a large space, parallel to the way out of the country. It was an anthropological monument of peasant civilization, which would have deserved to be restored and maintained, like an open-air museum. Back then, we didn't go for the subtle. Not that today there have been great improvements, but at least some constraints exist, unseen to the "barbarians". Those, so to speak, who would build hotels on the shores of protected tourist beaches. The damage had already been done when the Plan was built, there was some controversy over the choice of the site and the candidacy of the Sardinian sculptor Costantino Nivola, to whom Pomodoro was preferred. It is now local history.
