Perugia (Umbria). Piazza Grande. Fontana Maggiore (1275). The oldest square in the city, embarrassingly beautiful, since there is no corner that is not worthy of interest. The asymmetric square, formerly Foro Romano, houses one side of the Palazzo dei Priori, the Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Loggia di Braccio Fortebracci, the Podestà's palace, the archbishop's palace. The five main streets branch off from it. At the center of the square is the Fontana Maggiore (gothic), a work of the second half of the thirteenth century by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. The decorations evoke, in the complex iconological message, the political and cultural program of the Perugian Commune. Made of Assisi stone. It includes 50 bas-reliefs and 24 statues. In the lower basin are represented the months of the year with the signs of the zodiac and the scenes of the agrarian tradition and of the feudal culture, the liberal arts and characters of the Bible and of the history of Rome. Perugia (Umbria). Corso Vannucci. National Gallery of Umbria. The Pietro Vannucci course is an open-air museum together with the Piazza Grande (even the beautiful cities use to ruin their historic toponymy renaming streets and squares with war denominations, I will not cite the current name of the square ... And to think we are talking about the city of Capitini), but it also hosts museums as such, like the National Gallery of Umbria. Needless to say, it preserves the largest collection of works of Umbrian art and some of the most significant works of art in central Italy, from the 13th to the 19th century. It was founded in the 16th century in the Convent of the Olivetans in Montemorcino. In 1878 it was transferred to the Palazzo dei Priori. In 1918 it became a State Museum, therefore the centenary occurs. The works are exhibited in forty rooms on two floors of the building. It hosts the major Italian artists, we mention only Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Mantegna, Pinturicchio, the Perugino (Pietro Vannucci). Todi (Umbria). Tomb of Jacopone da Todi in the cripta of the Basilica of San Fortunato. Jacopo, a companion and spiritual Franciscan friar, born of a noble Tuderte family (De Benedetti) in 1230, notary, poet, chose poverty as St. Francis. During his life he knew the comforts and the married life, ceased dramatically for the death of his wife in an accident, which changed his life. Following the clash with the conventuals, who wanted to upset the Franciscan regola, he was excommunicated by Bonifax and imprisoned.
