life series lore could be such a beautiful case study for the mystification of sacrifice
rene girard? in my mcyt? it's more likely than you think
this is partly true of changes between later seasons as well but what i really like about the changes between third life and last life is that all but one* are to me pretty clearly an attempt to extend to all players the dynamics that led to both success and conflict for a smaller number of players in third life. but at the same time to limit for all players certain successful strategies that were used by some players in third life
i am also Of The View that other than. novelty being good for the algorithm / sheer love of the gimmick, a lot of changes between life series seasons involve the intention to get the interesting middle parts of earlier seasons to begin earlier and carry on for longer. by interesting middle parts i mean ‘there’s not no conflict because everyone is green, and there’s not total confusing conflict because everyone is red’.
the changes in last life are: 1) randomised starting number of lives 2) /givelife 3) And There Was Only One Enchanting Table, 4) no non-red alliances with reds, and 5) the boogeyman. *which was my asterisk from earlier it is its whole own thing.
changes 1) and 2) start the game with a level of unfairness that leads to conflict but allow a mechanism that can pull that conflict back before it gets more chaotic. they also start everyone off with the potential for Problematic Life Gap teams. which is either bad or good depending. change 2) is also to meeee an extension of grian pledging his life to scar in third life into an actual game mechanic. and off the top of my head i don’t think anyone did this? but it did also allow the potential for someone to give away all but one of their lives to intentionally go red renstyle. blah blah if you are making a youtube series you want everyone to have equal access to dynamics that your audience enjoyed watching instead of leaving it fully up to luck.
change 3) is just. let’s have some disputed object surely everybody loves disputed object (mfw the disputed object becomes irrelevant.) everyone wanting this one thing both incentivises and disincentives people from trying to get it and have a monopoly on it. because sure you can do that but everyone is going to want to kill you about it. this is about third life monopolymania / renchanting business model / you may slay me and take the enchanter or whatever
change 4) is i assume about preventing green/red alliances and their substitution of roles. which like. well grian you could have simply not done all of that in third life. but preventing yourself and everyone else from doing it Again is perhaps a noble aim. preventing greens from acting on reds’ behalfs is also in part about prolonging the time before everyone is chaotically red by disallowing the chaos of non-reds essentially behaving red.
and change 5) is The Curse. i have too many things to say about The Curse for this post lol
