To My Girls

Yesterday I went to my favorite spot in the world, the beach. To say the day had been perfect would be an understatement: The water was calm enough to float on, the sun was blazing but there was a breeze to cool you down, I had my sandwich and my Arnold Palmer, and I had the ones I loved surrounding me; my mom and my sister.

While I was sunbathing, I see a breathtakingly gorgeous girl walk over to her boyfriend with her little brother, who had been lying down on his blanket for quite some time. Unfortunately I could tell they had been fighting that day, snide remarks being said and mean words said under their breath. But that's what couples do. They bicker every once in a while, so you don't really think anything of it. 

I'm having a conversation with my mom about god knows what, and I hear "I'm not cleaning this sh*t up by myself I didn't come here alone." from the boyfriends mouth. I glance quickly at the two, the girl didn't say a word, but she continued to pick up the blanket and shake some of the sand off of it. I turn back to my mom to finish the conversation and all of a sudden I hear a smack. A loud gasp escapes my moms mouth, and I turn around again, facing the couple. The guy had punched his girlfriend square in the face for getting sand on him while shaking off a blanket. I saw her sunglasses on the ground, and looked back to her face to see tears welling up in her eyes, but she was fighting it. She didn't want to seem weak. 

My mom rose from her chair about to pounce on that man, but she realized that I was watching and decided not to. A blonde woman set up next to us screamed "ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME? YOU NEVER HIT A WOMAN. NEVER." he replies, "N*GGA I'LL HIT YOU TOO." she then says "you hit me, that'll be the last person you ever hit." 

He shook his head and walked away, leaving his girlfriend and his girlfriends little brother to clean everything up. My mom walked over to the girl to ask her if she was okay and the girl responds "Please just leave it alone. Just forget about it. It's none of your business. It was my fault"

I'm going to stop the story there, because the rest is irrelevant. 

To My Girls. You are all beautiful. Never settle. If that happened in public I don't even want to imagine what happens behind closed doors. Don't defend your abusive boyfriend, because then you are the weak one.

Now, I know I'm not a good story-teller, but I got my point across that getting hit by a man is U N E X C E P T A B L E. Even being talked to with such disrespect is absolutely nauseating, and I wish girls didn't have to go through that. You are not a piece of property, you are not worthless. You mean something to someone. You don't have to deal with that, so if there is something like that where you're getting hurt physically and verbally, leave his sorry ass, because he deserves to die old an alone with no one to love. Just remember that he isn't what you need. You need someone to treat you with respect; to treat you like a f*cking queen. Because that is exactly what you are. 

To friends seeing this go on, please try and stop it. It will only get worse.

And to her little brother, I hope he learned from her boyfriend's mistakes, and holds his girlfriend on a pedestal when he's older.
