Being home to the Asiatic Lions community, after Africa, Gir National Park is the natural habitat of these lions as the lions keep moving and creating the area named ‘lion corridors’, also known as Sasan National Park or Gir Van. Gir is home to 40 mammal species and around 425 bird species located in the Junagarh district of Gujarat. The Gir National Park is the only place in India where this race of Asiatic Lion is found in its native habitat. Also, the Gir ecosystem comprises a heterogeneous variety of flora and fauna species that are being preserved in the national park with the efforts of the forest department, wildlife activists, and various NGOs therefore, regarded as the crown jewel of Gujarat’s ecological reservoir.
Gir National Park is well known for its distinguished wildlife destinations in India which gained popularity among wildlife enthusiasts, hunters, nature enthusiasts, researchers, photographers, and adventure travelers due to its diverse species of flora and fauna uniquely found in this protected area.
Being the only destination in India for Asiatic Lion sightings, Gir National Park continues to attract a large number of travelers every year from all over the world.
A Great number of wild animals and rarely seen bird species like pygmy woodpeckers, hyenas, Asiatic wild asses, rusty spotted cat, Gir foxes, brown fish owls, black deer, and many more can be sighted here as the topography of Gir comprises of evergreen and semi-arid deciduous forests along with the plateaus, valleys, isolated hills, scrub jungle, rocky terrain, and the perennial rivers namely Hiran, Godavari, Saraswati, Machhundri, Datardi, Shingoda, and Raval drench the park area. As it is located just next to the lake called Nalsarovar, the water body also serves as a bird sanctuary.
As per the IUCN Red List, the national park is internationally honored for successfully safeguarding endangered species from extinction. Also, the park is an important biological study place contributing remarkably towards the advancement of scientific research.
