A quick action shot of the finished base before I put on the first set of gores. When I measured the circumference to create the gores, I assumed that the paper would stay the same size when wet and didn't account for the paper stretching, which resulted with heavy overlapping in the end. #sorryEurope so I did end up creating a second set of gores, which honestly was for the best because I learned a lot in the first gore application process. #globe #cartography #globemaking #gisiscool #mapnerd #gis #MGIS #FinalProject (at Minneapolis, Minnesota)

When I teach beginning pottery students I always stress that you have to love your first pots, mistakes and all. So I am following that advice for my first gore set. I love them, even with their many, many mistakes. You can kinda see the tear where I had to remove the last overlapping gore to make an even base to apply the second set of gores. 🌐🗺🌐 #globe #globemaking #cartography #mapmaking #gis #mapnerd #gisiscool #MGIS #FinalProject (at St.Paul/ Minneapolis)
Applying my first gores to the globe was all sorts of wonderful lessons, including but not limited to: spoons are your friend (great for smoothing edges without ripping), always wet the paper before applying the gesso (whoops), more gesso is not necessarily better (more likely to wrinkle, rip and also make you cry). And for the love of all that is merciful be patient. I did end up applying a pigment to my gesso so that it was blue (I thought that would make painting the oceans easier)... which worked out well enough but mixing the pigment and gesso regularly was not worth the effort. 🌐🗺🌐 #globe #cartography #mapmaking #globemaking #gis #mapnerd #gisiscool #MGIS #FinalProject (at Minneapolis, Minnesota)
