An important stop from tour „Military history and Axalp Air Show 2015” is at aviation museum Gianni Caproni from Vizzola Ticino.
Gianni Caproni – 1918
Aviation Museum located in Vizzola Ticino, near Milan’s Malpensa airport is not only the largest museum dedicated to aviation but also the world’s first aviation museum. The project started around the original production halls of the Battista Giovanni „Gianni” Caproni, one of the leading airlines in the Varese area. Over the years, aircraft manufacturers such as Caproni itself, Augusta, Aermacchi and Siai Marchetti turned the area into an aeronautical industrial district maintaining international standards even today.
Museum History
Giovanni Battista Caproni, better known as Gianni Caproni (Arco, 1886 – Rome 1957), was an engineer in the Trentino region of northern Italy, which was renowned for the design and piloting of several pioneering aircraft 1910 and 1913. Planes like Caproni.1, Ca.6 and Ca.12 were milestones in Italian aviation during the first World War. Caproni has become one of the leading allies manufacturers of airplanes, being responsible for the design and manufacture of long range multi-engine bombers like Caproni Ca.32, Ca.33, Ca.36 and Ca.40. These bombers were among the most representative in the interwar period.
Giulio Douhet – The author of strategic bombing theory
Using Caproni bombers based on theories of Giulio Douhet‘s strategic bombing was considered as a landmark in the history of aviation.
In addition to his talent for engineering, Gianni Caproni was convinced of the importance of preserving and honoring the historical heritage linked to the birth and early development of aviation in general and Italian Caproni company in particular. He began to gather not only an extensive collection of aircraft and aviation-related technologies, but also related collections of documents and memoirs. Besides various airplane parts, Caproni together with his wife Timina Guasti Caproni which have a strong artistic sensibility, managed to gather a large collection of paintings and works of art so that Caproni’s collections reflected not only love for aviation history, but also for the arts. In the second part of the ’20s Caproni family decided to open a museum with all collections gathered by then.

In 1927, at the joint decision of the spouses was established the Caproni Museum in Taliedo, not far from Milan. It was the first museum dedicated to aviation and oldest corporate museum in Italy. The original purpose of the museum was to keep all the important elements of Caproni’s aircraft construction history but soon became a museum of the history of flight and other connected aviation disciplines.
The museum has preserved its original location in Taliedo near the Caproni company’s halls until after the outbreak of WWII. However, in the first half of the ’30s collections were stored even in assembly halls, location not very favorable for preserving and displaying artifacts.

Seeing the accelerated deterioration, after 1935 it was decided to build a dedicated exhibition hall. In this respect, one of the largest hangars at the airport Taliedo was transformed and became the first dedicated spacious exhibition area where exhibits could be arranged properly.
Since 1942 it has become necessary to move some of Caproni aircraft to avoid accidental destruction caused by Allied bombing. Despite the measures taken, some of the exhibits perished in the flames. Some of the most significant losses were only remaining example of Ca.42, VI-B Roland Nieuport-Macchi and 29. However, most of the exhibits have survived the war.

In 1960 the museum was relocated and reopened in the old Caproni factory in Vizzola Tricino and close to place where will be built later Malpensa airport. Starting with this moment to the initial collection will be added new and new exhibits to these days in a permanent growth. At the entrance to museum is a monument with an airplane Lockheed Starfighter F-104G. The monument was erected in memory of Licio Giorgieri, Italian Air Force general assassinated in March 1987 by a commando of the Red Brigades.
