An impact made
Hello Gishwhes,
I would like to write about a dear friend for today’s submission, not because I want her to win things necessarily, but I want her to know how dear she is to me. 2014-15, 7th grade, we were getting our combos and revisiting the locker-sharing rules when I found her to my left. She was shy and not very outspoken, with a soft voice and kind eyes. Her face was pretty with its’ own quaint charms, the crinkle around her eye when she blinked, the dimple in her cheeks when she smiled and the blush when she looked at the ground.
“Hi there, I guess we’re gonna be seeing a lot of each other this school year, what’s your name?”
“H/n, and what’s yours?” (I don’t really know if she wants me to post her name and I’m respecting that, f/n means ‘Friend’s Name’ if you didn’t know)
“I’m Gabrielle, what school did you go to last year?”
“I’m from Oregon, so it’s probably not a school you’re familiar with,” she said shyly, not sounding rude but very understanding.
“Well, welcome to cold, dark Alaska where we ride sled dog teams to school and live in igloos,” I said with an over-the-top guide feel. We exchanged schedules and bid each other goodbye as we left for first hour. Throughout the school year, we had gotten close and we did rub off on each other, I became more creative, looking into other fandoms that I extremely enjoy, and tried drawing, not that anything good came of the latter. I got her to be more open and out-going because I knew what powerful ideas she had and I also got her into watchingSPNAndPotentiallyRuiningHerLife. We talked a lot about fandom conspiracies and poetry, headcanons and fanfictions, we were as thick as thieves. She was such a nice person to everyone, even if she secretly loathed them, we believed in equality and hearts, not parts. She warmed hearts with her cuteness and cluelessness, for instance, if you were around her and cursed, she would dramatically clap her hands on her ears and scold, “WORDS,” in an inside voice that sounded more shocked than fierce even though she heard them all before, and it never ceased to make us all laugh. She spoke with clarity and confidence in her voice, even if it was feigned.
Just a bit of background information, when I was four, my father had developed lymphoma, a type of cancer that had sheltered in his thigh. He got treated and beat it, feeling on the top of the world three years later when my brother was born.
F/n was one of the bestest friends ever, we virtually never hung out outside of school but it felt as if we were always hanging out at a sleepover. So surprise when we find out that our birthdays are two days apart, and she invites me to her house for the first time ever, and we all watch movies and eat cake with some other invited friends.
At the end of seventh grade, my father had reoccurring cancer, and I was worried. But he’d pull through, he always does . . . .
And when I told f/n, the first thing she did was hug me and she told me that she’d be my support.
And my dad did pull through and her support was the one thing I treasured more than anything. And then boy drama was all over the place, when I felt horrible that my crush didn’t like me back, crushing me. She simply said, “Well, Dean, Cas, Sam, Crowley and Lucifer are better,” (Okay, she didn’t phrase it like that, but it’s close enough XD)
So Jensen Ackles and Misha became my unofficial bros and consultants. I’d sit on my bed and say, “Dean, please just be real and beat this person up because I don’t want to look at their gorgeous face again,” and then laugh.
Life seemed to breeze by, f/n came to one of my band concerts and Music Machine preformances.
Eighth grade started, as did our political experience, our Social Studies teacher did this program where we brought in senators and several people to come talk to us and take questions, I met Former United States Senator Mark Begich, whose father our school was named after, United States Senator Dan Sullivan and several other people learning about how they reacted, but I’ll always remember our snickering at United States Representative Don Young yelling at our lunch bell to ‘Shut Up’. He may have scared some but we found it terrible hilarious.
After our escapades and nearing fourth quarter, I found that yet again my father had been diagnosed with cancer, but it was worse, he was flown down to Seattle with my mother while I was at school and I ended up residing with my dear aunt and uncle in Chugiak, Alaska. Of course I told f/n immediately, and all we could do was hope. My father ended up getting worse, with tumours in his brain and all throughout his body. The gym teacher at the school had known me in kindergarten and he cared about me as did several of my other teachers. So when I found out that my father was too weak to survive chemo, I realised that I would lose him that year. I told that gym teacher and my band director in addition to my friend. My band director told me that he had lost his parents early too, so he understood. When my teachers found out, they said I could ‘take a break whenever I needed’ I didn’t like that, all of the other teachers, thinking I was fragile. Except for my band director and gym teacher who kept pushing me to do the best, knowing that if I was worse, I wouldn’t have to think about the upcoming inevitable. F/n was always helping me, she didn’t look at me like some broken person who wanted pity or easier work, she saw me and knew I could walk away from this.
I didn’t want to think about how bad the situation was until my aunt told me that we’d probably fly down soon to see him.
The next day, I told f/n before I was taken out of school at third hour to go pack to see my dying father. We stayed at the hospital, we watched his sleeping struggling form and I texted her from the hospital, telling her about how I felt. Her insight from Alaska helped more than anything, her support and unwillingness to give up on me gave me strength.
When I arrived back at school three days later, all the teachers looked at me, ones that didn’t even teach me, looked at me with pity and said, “I’m sorry,” all I wanted was to find an amplifier and yell, “DON’T SAY YOU’RE SORRY! I DON’T CARE!” Because I really didn’t. Band and f/n is what I stuck to, I didn’t grieve like at all and I’m not bothered by that, because everything I have now and where I was then was due to my amazing friend. Thank you @the-fandoms-therapist
