“300 Val D’Or Miners Threaten To Strike,” Toronto Star. October 9, 1940. Page 02. ---- Val d’Or, Que., Oct. 9 - (CP) - Most of the 300 workers at Sullivan Consolidated Mines Ltd. did not report for work today. They voted to strike at a meeting last night. Complaints were alleged refusal of the company to re-employ four men fired for union activities and to grant a general increase in wages of 40 cents a day. ---- N.S. Miners Strike Glace Bay, N.S., Oct. 9 - (CP) - Dominion Coal Company’s Caledonia colliery and its 500 employees remained idle today as the men continued a strike arising from a dispute over the transfer of some men from reserve. They were expected to return to work tomorrow, pending negotiations. Five hundred men were thrown into idleness when a strike tied up the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company’s Princess colliery at Sydney Mines. The men walked out in a dispute over cleaning of walls in a section of the pit.
Spectacular fire takes yet another piece of Glace Bay's historical buildings Saturday night. This building was well over 100 years old. At one time it was the home of the C.N office where you could send and receive telegraphs .
Glace Bay Nova Scotia
GLACE BAY ILLUSTRATED
Part of an ongoing series depicting communities in Cape Breton, this is a snippet of my focus on Glace Bay. I focused on gathering places in the community, The Savoy Theatre, Holy Cross Church, Renwick Brook and because they have a direct relation to my hometown, Ka’ley Bay Fisheries. I’m currently working on a large illustrated map of the community pulling focus on a number of key landmarks and the different communities.
Any Nova Scotia witches? On anon cause it's a v small province but I'll check out the people who reblog ❤️
