Beneath An Ancient Sea

Limestone landscapes, like what you get in the Yorkshire Dales, are formed from the skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral, forams and molluscs, so where you find limestone you know the area was once at the bottom of the sea. I find this sort of vastness of landscape history totally fascinating. =)

Watlowes Dry Valley, Malhamdale, Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire, England.

ISO100, ƒ/5.6, 1⁄13sec at 14mm (21mm full-frame equiv.) using a hard 2-stop ND grad filter on my Sigma dp0 Quattro. This is a single exposure shot twice for focus stacking. Processed in Sigma’s Photo Pro, edited in Capture One and Photoshop.

Watching the Passing Snow

A snowstorm blows over and around the craggy fells at the head of Longsleddale. Pockets of spot lighting from the sun traced around the contours of the valley. I clambered up the eastern side of the valley to find compositions whilst this gorgeous light was happening. Thankfully, around this part of Longsleddale, one can find lots of glacial erratics and other craggy outcrops to play around with. Whilst also making sure I don’t disturb the sheep. =)
