Until she went to Hogwarts, Andromeda wanted desperately to win the attention and affection of at least one parent. Somehow, this affectionate, warm little girl had been born to two very cool, distant people. She never could understand them, but she wanted to love them. So she did everything she could, for a time. During her youngest years, she tried to follow the rules as best she could. But her sisters were always better than she was at that particular game - her efforts were never noticed.
At seven or eight years old, a switch flipped in the young girl's mind. She decided that if following the rules and being exactly what they expected her to be couldn't get her parents to pay attention to her, she would try something different. She bent the rules as far as they'd go without breaking, she'd play tricks on the house elves, she'd be just a little too loud.
All this earned her were haughty looks and long afternoons alone in her room.
Eleven year old Andromeda had just about given up. She was eager to go to Hogwarts (though she was loathe to leave her little sister) and make new friends. There was still that part of her that yearned for approval.
All she got was a letter a few lines long congratulating her on making Slytherin. From that point on, the rules were only to be followed while her parents were watching, and only because it kept her sisters happy. There were people in Hogwarts, it seemed to her, who loved her more than her parents ever did. Why should she not devote her energy to them, instead?
