Looking for a way to conserve moisture for your next fight? Why not assume a pod shape, like this Gladiator treefrog [Hypsiboas rosenbergi; synonymous with Boana rosenbergi] has done? These frogs are native to Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ecuador. Their common name comes from the high aggression of the males. Males will battle each other for access to nesting sites, sometimes with lethal results. The tucked-in posture in the top image helps tree frogs conserve water. It reduces their surface area, resulting in better moisture retention. Images by Ben Van Allen.
