Failure. Success. What is it? Is it dependent on time? Is it dependent on growth? Or is it about endurance? It was April or May when @showz_art asked us to help him make a mural happen in Skid Row. We said yes. I believe this: Make it happen!Regardless of resources or know how. There’s benefits and draw backs to that mentality. Adventures happen and shit gets accomplished. Except when it doesn’t. We started work on the mural in June, with a team of talented artists. It’s a big wall. Resources were limited since it primarily came out of my own pocket. The batteries from the scissor lift got stolen. We had to pay an extra $600 to replace them. @indeclineofficial graciously stepped in and covered half of it. @co_labs have been waiting patiently for us to finish the wall so they can finish their video coverage. This was a big project financially, socially, artistically and emotionally. I’ve never organized a group of street artists at a wall, rented a lift and made a community art piece come together in the midst of a houseless community park. With no funding. And made sure it was documented. Oh, and painted with Christian teens from Texas while ProDommes made Pom Pom’s for immigrant activism. What? Anyway. Our community of badass weirdos have been pushing hard to finish this piece. I tend to believe art can be in process for long periods and that’s more than okay. I also know what an unfinished mural does to community moral in a marginalized area like Skid Row. It says: They forgot us. They quit coming back. It says to @co_labs that Sidewalk Project doesn’t finish work. It says to the artists who showed up and finished their pieces that we don’t respect them enough to make sure their pieces are featured with absolute care. Fuck that! Respect. For all our people. We’re not done. We keep coming back. I might not know what I’m doing. We might not have any money. We might have to beg for artists and resources. And. I believe this: Make it happen! December 16.
