Haha the weirdest part about this masters problem is that I'm going to ask my seminar prof to write a recommendation for me, and the conversation is going to go something like, "hey can you write a rec for me?" "I suppose. You're going to do your PhD?" "No... unfortunately." "Oh, then what?" "Uh, I don't know yet, but definitely a masters in something at least distantly related to linguistics." "... right."

huh. there is totally a masters program. only it’s just like part of the PhD haha. “Berkeley’s graduate program is a Ph.D. program in which students earn an M.A. along the way.”

Yeah, and then also "Berkeley does not accept students for a terminal M.A." or something like that, which kills my hopes.

Yeah, just make sure you get a 3.5 and have good research experience to have a decent chance of getting in. Really.

I can't do postgrad in Berkeley because there's no program for a linguistics masters.

And you probably don't know this... but Berkeley's PhD program's greatest strength is its emphasis on fieldwork. Every grad student has to take one year of Field Methods (which is taught by my research prof!). So you'd be working with a language consultant throughout the entire year to document their dying language. Plus, the aforementioned research professor is an Amazonian specialist who goes there every summer, and whose PhD thesis was the documentation of Nanti, and there are two other professors who work with revitalizing Northern Californian languages... and there's the Survey of Californian and Other Indian Languages. ah basically look here: http://linguistics.berkeley.edu/research/field/

and yeah, the lounge is pretty awesome, with its couches and all. it's extremely social... think a room full of grad students and the most nerdy undergrads :D

Pfft, if you think Praat is un-user-friendly, try Wavesurfer or Phon. Even more frustrating. And I'm sure you can figure it out... after all, you are not a technology noob right!

what’s your major? (just curious :D)

Technically, it's English with a Linguistics focus.  My school unfortunately doesn't have a... full Linguistics program like other schools.  And that's being nice about it.  We're not even our own department.  We're lumped in with Literature and Writing majors and forced to take the same common core classes (even though I'd really rather not sit with a bunch of sophomores and talk about great Walt Whitman is, or who Shakespeare's sonnets were written to.  I frankly don't care that much.). 

I thought about transferring to a school with a full-fledged Ling department, but I have everything figured out here, and my degree is working for my intended career well.  Field work and language reconstruction are awesome, but what I'm doing is going to help me become the best editor I can be.
