Featured on Gaucho (1980), this was the last official studio album released during the original “classic” run of Steely Dan (1972-1980). “Glamour Profession” is equally soothing and moody, putting you into a peaceful trance. But with that calm comes a rush of wonder, as the colors in the music pallet arouse feelings of curiosity and danger. The funky muted rhythm guitar (provided by Steve Kahn), perfectly timed drum beat by Steve Gadd, and swirling electric piano & synthesizer work (by Donald Fagen) establish the feeling of intrigue, with the horn section conveying the sense of urgency and danger. The song also features quietly elegant guitar plucking and solo fills by guitarist Steve Kahn, who deserves the MVP award on this one. Co-writers (and band masterminds) Walter Becker & Donald Fagen create such an abundance of open space with their music (and often-puzzling lyrics), it’s tempting to fill the void with your own imagination. Here, perhaps something of a murder mystery, a car chase, drug deal gone bad, or something else with a touch of seediness and underworld tone. As with so many of the songs on this list, the length is considerable (7 minutes, 30 seconds to be exact), but you never mind as you sit back and enjoy the ride in the getaway car…
