From @suemcleodceramics who is always sharing glaze info! • • • • • Yesterday's post showed how a glaze applies differently when you have different water content (different specific gravities). 🤓 This post shows the difference before and after flocculating a glaze with Epsom salts. Both of these samples have the exact same amount of water (Specific gravity = 1.48). 🤓 Before the Epsom salts are added (left tile) the glaze is milky thin, the particles move freely past one another and don't stick well to the test tile. 🤓 When the glaze is flocculated with Epsom salts (right tile) the glaze is thicker in the bucket, the particles stick to each other and stick better to the test tile, giving a thicker layer. 🤓 The glaze also takes a bit longer to dry which allows for a smoother, even coat. 🤓 Flocculation and water content both affect how a glaze will apply. Every glaze will have different characteristics. Honestly, I could not be happier with this glaze. I have used this combo many times, but after a pile of test tiles getting the application just right... so happy. The key here is the overlap. My glazes always start with three brushed coats, but I put a thin 4th layer of red over the whole piece. It doesn’t really show on the blue, but there are red flashes and rivulets that tie the two glazes together. And, of course, the iron spots made by sprinkling some brass filings on the wet glaze. I love those. Another odd but beautiful combo from my Try Everything test tiles last month. This is Coyote Clay’s Gun Metal Green on Axner’s Lavender Porcelain with none of my usual experimental additives. This glaze is normally instantly recognizable as a glossy bright green with grey spots, but the purple porcelain changes it’s color to a moss green, makes it a satin finish, and prevents the usual microcrystalline spot formations. Plus, extra drippy! Very cool. Making another batch of test tiles.
