transferring to dalton academy, after the bullying at his old school that eventually resulted in him ending up in the hospital after the sadie hawkins dance, made blaine feel safe again in the hallways for the first time in a long time. the uniforms, traditions and order offered a feeling of safety, like he finally belonged somewhere just by wearing the blazer.
joining the warblers and becoming their lead soloist. he initially joined the warblers thinking he'd be just another voice in the background. while he loved performing, he was content with the idea of having a way to blend in even more. but the very first time he auditioned for a solo, he got it, and much to his own surprise he suddenly became their lead soloist, standing at the front of the group as only a sophomore. it was thrilling, but also a little bit overwhelming at times. it was like everyone saw him as blaine anderson, the charming and confident lead singer who had everything figured out, while deep down, he still didn't feel confident at all and was still just trying to figure out who he really was. he found brotherhood at dalton, though. trust, friendship and a chance to rebuild his confidence.
and, of course, he met kurt. the stranger on the staircase who would become his best friend, first love and eventually his husband. meeting him shaped not only the rest of his time in high school, but the rest of his life. @gleefulkh
his start at mckinley wasn't necessarily smooth. most of the new directions seemed suspicious of him, like he was some kind of jesse st. james 2.0. but while he felt like an outsider at first, he eventually found himself becoming part of their chaotic, loud, dysfunctional, but loving little family. winning first place at nationals with the new directions was one of blaine's proudest moments in high school.
playing the lead role in west side story. being part of the school musical helped him grow closer to his fellow teammates, and blaine loved every second of it. and while he wasn't in the right headspace to play the lead again for mckinley's next annual musical, he loved being part of the production and getting to portray teen angel in grease.
in his senior year, sam and tina became his closest friends. the start of blaine's senior year was rough. now that kurt had moved to new york city and the two of them had broken up, blaine missed his anchor, the one person he'd truly felt safe with at mckinley. but despite the warblers' attempts to lure him back to dalton, the new directions (and finn, sam and tina in particular) helped him realise that he belonged at mckinley. blaine and tina became practically inseparable for the remainder of the year, while sam became his rock, and the two of them led the glee club through missing teachers, stolen trophies and another round of sue sylvester's schemes. the year ended on a high note, with the new directions earning second place at nationals and blaine graduating as both senior class president and valedictorian — titles he wore with pride. @wtfsamevans

as a general rule, sebastian smythe had never been much of a kid person. of course as a teenager, he'd become a big brother for the first time, and spending time with his little sister had given him some training, but she was a teenager now, and he'd long since forgotten the nuances of child-rearing, but somehow, he apparently looked like the type of guy that a single mother would feel safe leaving her kid with. which was how sebastian found himself on a 5 hour flight, sitting next to a seven year old, who hadn't stopped talking for a single moment since the plane had pulled away from the gate at LAX.
"so, where is your mom again?" he questioned, almost immediately regretting it as the kid launched into a long explanation about why he was an unattended minor on a flight to ohio, being shipped off over the christmas holiday to spend some much needed quality time with his father. the kid, who's name escaped sebastian continued, explaining in excruciating detail why his parents were together anymore, and if sebastian had to guess, he was missing a key detail in his explanation - his parents definitely split because of him. sebastian was half tempted to say it too, but he knew that cruelty definitely wasn't in the list of things he'd learned about child rearing when his sister had been young. still, he was already dreading this trip to ohio, did the ride to it have to be painful as well?
"some kids need to be ipad kids." he finally spoke, digging into his carry on and pulling out his personal ipad before handing it to the kid, "go wild." he added with a grin, watching the kid's eyes widen with excitement before he expertly navigated the app store and started to download apps sebastian was sure he'd never heard of before and finally, for a split second - silence.
he still wasn't sure why he'd accepted the invitation home, his history with mckinley and the glee clubs in ohio was tense, at best. and he hadn't kept in touch with anyone from his former school, but things had been so hard lately, everyday felt like he was just trying to keep his head above water, and whether he admitted it or not, he needed a win. and heading back to ohio to observe the boring lives that had no doubt become of the former show choir kids he used to call friends and rivals, was an easy way to raise his spirits. he did love to see other people struggle. and if he was being more honest, he'd missed singing, performing, which had been such a big part of his adolescence had all but disappeared in hi adult life - unless presenting closing arguments with a dramatic flair counted as a performance. his courtroom opponents had called them worse. nevertheless, ohio was home. and for the first time in a long time, being home for the holidays, didn't sound so bad.
