페이지 하단 강제 스크롤 광고(현재 ‘아웃배너’와 ‘FS배너’ 두 종류)는 페이지를 강제로 스크롤하여 광고를 보여주는 방식으로, 독서 흐름을 방해하므로 악성으로 분류됩니다.

‘아웃배너’는 강제 스크롤과 광고 로딩을 모두 차단하였습니다.

‘FS배너’는 광고 로딩만을 차단하였습니다. (이 차단 필터는 덤으로 조선일보를 볼 때 리얼클릭 광고 파일이 다운로드되는 버그도 차단해 줍니다.) ‘FS배너’의 스크롤 스크립트는 이 배너를 사용하는 사이트의 웹 소스에 들어있기 때문에, 각각의 사이트를 필터로 등록하여 차단하는 것은 효율적이지 않다고 판단했습니다. 광고가 로딩되지 않으므로 강제 스크롤의 불편함은 제법 줄어듭니다.

이 문서는 맥에서 GlimmerBlocker를 이용하여 국내 웹사이트의 악성 광고를 차단하는 방법을 설명합니다. GlimmerBlocker(이하 GB)는 웹사이트의 광고를 차단하거나 기능을 변경하는 역할을 하는 프로그램인데, 여타의 브라우저 확장파일이나 플러그인 방식이 아닌 로컬 웹 프록시 방식이라고 합니다. 그게 뭐가 대수인지는 잘 모르겠으나, 브라우저의 종류나 버전에 관계 없이 항상 동작한다는 것을 장점으로 내세우더군요.

GB는 특정 사이트 또는 특정 웹 요소를 차단/변경하는 ‘rule’과, 그 규칙을 모은 (폴더와 비슷한 개념의) ‘filter’로 구성되어 있습니다. 규칙이나 필터는 사용자가 직접 만들 수 있으며, 인터넷을 통해 필터를 공유하는 것도 쉽습니다. 저는 국내 악성 광고를 차단하는 규칙의 모음인 일명 ‘Bad KR Ads’ 필터를 공유하고자 합니다.

모든 광고가 나쁜 것은 아니기 때문에, “악성 광고”는 사용자를 불편/불쾌하게 만드는 것으로 한정했습니다. 본문의 내용을 가리거나 혐오스런 사진을 사용하거나 심하게 번쩍이는 경우를 ‘악성’으로 규정했습니다. 나머지 얌전한 광고들은 최대한 막지 않는 것이 웹 생태계를 위하는 일이라고 생각합니다.

GB 설치하기

http://glimmerblocker.org 맨 앞의 링크가 최신 버전을 받을 수 있는 링크입니다. 받아서 연 후에 설치 파일을 실행하면 됩니다. 설치가 실패하면서 Java을 설치하겠다고 하면, Java를 설치한 후에 다시 GB를 설치하면 됩니다.

Bad KR Ads 추가하기

시스템 환경설정에서 GB를 열고 두 번째 Filters 탭을 선택한 뒤, Filters 목록 아래의 톱니바퀴 버튼을 눌러서 Subscribe to Filter… 항목을 선택합니다. 주소창에 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/853063/badads.xml 을 붙여 넣고, 첫 번째 옵션을 Automatically update subscription(자동 업데이트)로 바꾼 후에 Subscribe 버튼을 누릅니다.

추가가 성공하면 창 아래의 Rules 목록에 각종 차단 규칙이 보일 것입니다. 그리고 온갖 악성 광고로 도배된 ZDNet Korea 사이트가

이렇게 깔끔해집니다.

필터 업데이트하기

이 필터는 지속적으로 업데이트가 되고 있습니다. 악성 광고가 담긴 웹페이지 주소를 제 트위터로 알려 주시면 확인 후 추가하겠습니다. GB는 컴퓨터가 재시동할 때마다 업데이트를 자동으로 확인하므로, 설치하고 난 후에는 별달리 신경 쓸 일이 없습니다. 수동으로 업데이트를 하려면 필터 목록에서 필터를 선택한 후에 톱니바퀴 메뉴에서 Update subscription…을 선택하면 됩니다.

Blocking Flash

I do not get on well with flash. Most of the time it's just doing junk content delivery that I have zero interest in. It crashes… it's a pain to install on Linux. The quality never seems to be as great as the HTML5 ones and they never have a standard UI. Horrible.

Luckily Apple have been doing their very best to drive a stake through its heart; but you still find it on the desktop. Sure there are programs like ClickToFlash and the like but they never manage to block it everywhere. They miss the RSS readers, the odd times I switch to other browsers (Opera: I love you but until 1Password support you I cannot switch full time). There hasn't been a proper hitting the nail on the head, all encompassing, elegant solution.

…Until now. For a while I've been using GlimmerBlocker to block ads. It's great. It filters all the connections in and out of my computer so it can even block the ads in my RSS reader. It needs a java-runtime which is okay I guess but it sorts the ad-blocking problem neatly and it also seems to offer the least hacky way to get Safari's search bar to use DuckDuckGo (who are lovely people and even added a !kolw command for me to search the KoLWiki).

I've also been getting around my Flash loathing by switching my user-agent string to an iPad every time I encounter flash. iPad doesn't do flash; but everyone supports it and if you pretend you're one most websites give you an MP4 rather than a FLV file (as well as less ads and occasionally cheaper wifi prices apparently). It's great.

Problem is you can't in Safari set it permanently. You can in Chrome (which is what I was doing), but it still means reeder still gets the FLVs when I look at my RSS feeds and then I need to click through... no. Not right. Must be a better way.

The trick is to get GlimmerBlocker to do the User-Agent switch. It's easy. Create a new rule; modify request; add the code

Bliss. Flash isn't even installed any more. I love GlimmerBlocker so much right now. I reinstalled the laptop today and it was the first thing to go on. Can't recommend it highly enough.

[GlimmerBlocker][gb] is an open source OS X preference pane for 10.5+ (they've just released an updated version that should work for 10.7) It serves as a proxy that allows you to block sites/ip address, and to inject code. I use it to run [userscripts][us] (as in GreaseMonkey, GreaseKit, etc) such as Helvetireader2 to make Google Reader more friendly. I run it through GlimmerBlocker so I don't have to install the script in all my browsers; I run [OmniWeb][ow], [Firefox][fx], [Safari][s], [Opera][o], and [Chrome][ch] (I used to run [Camino][c] but haven't had a chance to reinstall after an unfortunate incident)—each rock in their own way, I use each for certain kinds of work and for testing. I'm sure I've posted about it before, but I'm posting it again because the developer(s) are so damn cool. The OS X 10.7 compatible release included a slight annoyance, it still worked but was...slightly annoying. I emailed the developer(s) and by the time I got through with a game of dominos with my dad I had an email from Peter containing a new version! I lost both games (dad's been playing for 70 years!), but at least I had good news in my inbox to mitigate the defeat. So, Peter, if you ever see this—Thanks!
