I finished Dragon Ball Daima! Here are my thoughts:
As a whole, I liked it! It was the kind of series I wish Super inbodied more - as in less overpowered end of the universe stories and more contained but just as intense battles. It was also nice getting to see more of Supreme Kai Shin who is one of those side characters I feel like gets neglected in the main story in favour of brief and silly comedy moments.
The only critcism that really bugged me about the series was the way they made the Glinds non-gendered. Let's be clear, I actually love the idea that Shin and the other Kai's are all non-binary with a few maybe selecting a man or woman identity later in life. But in Daima, that isn't really what I got from it.
I mean, first it was just a one line commentary that didn't really fit because it came in the middle of the series rather than early on (in the second episode, why not have Kibito say "Degesu is Supreme Kai's sibling"? He called him brother and set a gendered norm right off the bat). Secondly Arinsu. There is nothing about that character that is non-gendered. She, like most adult females in Dragon Ball, has a very sexual body type, right down to the clothing and makeup. And agin, this could have been easily fixed by having a little more detail about the Glinds transitioning later in life and taking on a specific gender as they feel suits them. But there's no further detail other than "oh yeah we don't really have genders, we say as we constantly only use he/she pronouns for each other".
I don't know why this bothered me so much, but it really did! Maybe because it was just one line that could have been removed and would not have affected any of the rest of the series or its lore. So it really did feel tacked on.
